Digital Services Librarian – York University Libraries

In support of further growth in this area, York University Libraries are seeking an innovative and energetic librarian for the position of Digital Services Librarian in Bibliographic Services. The Digital Services Librarian will join a dynamic and growing team of digital professionals including the Digital Humanities Librarian, Digital Initiatives Librarian, Digital Projects and Outreach Archivist, Web Librarian, E-Learning Librarian and GIS Librarian.  This is an 18-month contractually limited appointment with the possibility of extension.  The Digital Services Librarian will play an integral role in supporting and developing digital initiatives within York University Libraries. Demonstrating excellent project management skills, the successful candidate will support the creation of digital collections at York University by collaborating with Archives and Special Collections, Library Computing Services and the Digital Initiatives Advisory Group to promote, plan, implement, support, and evaluate digital projects within the Libraries.  Associated responsibilities may also involve the hiring, training, and supervision of supporting staff. A significant component of this position involves advocating for and supporting the Library’s scholarly communications initiatives including serving on the Scholarly Communications Committee, liaising with the York community, administering the institutional repository YorkSpace, and supporting the digital journal hosting program York Digital Journals. Comfort with troubleshooting software challenges and providing project-related technical support will be required. Collaborating with colleagues, the incumbent will ensure that appropriate digital and metadata standards and procedures are established and followed. The Digital Services Librarian will be a member of the Digital Initiatives Advisory Group.  Some original and complex copy cataloguing may be required.

Qualifications:
  • MLS (or recognized equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program;
  • experience planning and implementing digitization projects or other complex digital library projects;
  • demonstrated experience with SGML/XML, metadata standards and schema;  
  • demonstrated initiative, service-oriented attitude, and project management skills;
  • knowledge of emerging trends in digital collections, scholarly communications, and in library and information technologies;
  • excellent software troubleshooting abilities and comfort with UNIX environments;
  • past programming experience an asset;
  • excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and in collaboration with others;
  • flexible attitude and ability to adapt to a changing environment; ability to balance multiple responsibilities; demonstrated time management skills;
  • willingness to undertake library and university committee responsibilities, professional development, research and scholarship.


This is an 18- month contractually limited appointment with the designation of Adjunct Librarian and appropriate for a librarian with up to nine years post-MLS experience.  The position is available from March 1, 2012.   Librarians at York University have academic status and are members of the York University Faculty Association bargaining unit (http://www.yufa.org/). Digital Services Librarian


Position Description: Reporting to the Head, Preservation Department, the Digital Preservation Librarian establishes policies and best practices for the long-term protection and access to digital materials and advises on all phases of the life cycle of digital content with the aim of long-term retention and access. Working closely with staff in Library Information Technology, Digital Library Services, Preservation, and other library departments, as well as with partners at other institutions, the Digital Preservation Librarian will:
·         Research, plan, and develop the digital preservation program for the University Libraries’ collections of enduring value in digital format: review existing library practices and analyze needs and establish policies and best practices for the long-term protection and access to digital materials of all types, both created and acquired by the library. Digital collections to be preserved include text, images, datasets, audio-visual resources, Web pages, and ephemera.
·         Assist in the ongoing development of requirements and specifications, including formats and metadata, for digital material the library solicits, accepts, or purchases into its collections. Advise both library staff and external content creators on strategies and the practical implementation of those specifications.
·         Advise library staff about digital initiatives on all phases of the life cycle of digital content, including research datasets, with the aim of long-term retention and access; provide training or orientations. Identify digital storage needs and recommend storage medium.
·         Represent and champion digital preservation interests across the library, the university, and to the community at large.
·         Prepare proposals for external funding for digital preservation projects. Prepare specifications for vended services that support the digital preservation program; evaluate responses to proposals for such services, make recommendations for selecting vendors; and act on behalf of the library as a technical liaison on preservation issues to vendors providing digital materials.
·         Represent the University Libraries in cooperative projects or programs in digital preservation.
·         Research and advise the library on contingency plans against threats to the digital collections, such as industry changes to file formats, natural disaster, and security breaches.
·         Stay current on developing technologies, standards, and practice in preservation of digital collections and data curation; recommend responses to these developments through periodic alerts, summaries, reports, and revisions to policies and procedures. Represent the University Library in forums on digital preservation at the campus, regional, national, or international level.

Required Qualifications:
·         Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
·         Demonstrated interest in professional development that will enhance the candidate’s value to the Libraries, the University, the profession, or the scholarly community.
·         Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace or community.
·         Demonstrated understanding of current digitization best practices for a variety of formats.
·         Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging preservation metadata standards.
·         Demonstrated understanding of copyright laws and rights management issues in a digital environment.
·         Familiarity with digital preservation and a trusted digital repository.
·         Demonstrated planning, time management and organizational skills.
·         Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
·         Experience working in a rapidly changing technological environment.

Desired Qualifications:
·         Knowledge of grant funding agencies and participation in grant writing and oversight.
·         Experience with digital conversion for a variety of formats including audio and/or video.
·         Experience applying Dublin Core Metadata Elements and technical metadata for supporting long-term archiving.
·         Proficiency using FTP, VPN, shared drives and Microsoft Office Suite software, particularly Excel.
·         Experience working on digital library collections in an academic setting.

Salary and appointment: Appointment will be made at the Librarian I level with a salary range of $43,000 to $46,000. Start date is negotiable. Digital Services Librarian (Tenure Track)

Rollins College is looking for a service-oriented librarian eager to help shape a dynamic, forward-looking liberal arts college library through the ongoing implementation and support of digital resources, services, and systems with primary responsibility for the development of the SirsiDynix Symphony ILS. This is a tenure track faculty position; the successful candidate is expected to be appointed as an assistant professor, although previous experience and qualifications may be taken into account in determining initial rank.

Under the direction of the Head of Digital Services & Systems, the Digital Services Librarian will work with the Digital Services & Systems department and the rest of the library to plan, implement, integrate, and maintain digital systems including the SirsiDynix Symphony ILS, the Serials Solutions Knowledge base, and 360 Suite, the library’s web presence, EZProxy, ILLiad, RefWorks, ContentDM, and a number of third-party vendor online resources. The successful candidate will also assist library users, faculty, and staff in the use of the library’s digital systems and, like all full time librarians at Rollins, will participate in reference service, instruction, and liaison with academic departments.

Qualifications

· MLS from an ALA-accredited library school and systems, automation or digitization experience are required.

· Preferred qualifications include experience with the administration of Integrated Library Systems, ideally Sirsi; experience designing and maintaining web pages; working knowledge of Solaris/Unix, HTML, XML, CSS, Java, Javascript, and/or PHP.

· Experience with electronic resource management systems, digital library implementations, Blackboard or similar course management systems, and/or graphic design for the Web.

The successful candidate will demonstrate most if not all of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: the abilities to communicate well orally and in writing, to interact with the public effectively and courteously, and to work in a team environment and independently; an appreciation for the liberal arts and the role of the library in higher education; strong analytical/problem-solving skills and attention to detail; skills in the implementation and administration of a variety of computer software used in the library; demonstrated knowledge and experience with web-based resources; ability to collect, manage, and communicate numerical information accurately and clearly; enthusiasm for teaching and experience with information literacy instruction with groups and individuals; potential to present, publish, or otherwise contribute to the library profession; familiarity with Windows, Microsoft Office, pc hardware and peripherals, and basic network understanding/skills; experience with access methods such as IP authentication, proxy servers, and EZproxy; familiarity with blogs, wikis, media-casting, RSS, or other Web 2.0 applications; demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems with systems and electronic services.

Oxford College of Emory University invites candidates to apply for the position of Digital Services Librarian. We seek an innovative individual with teaching, technology, and collaboration skills to participate as a member of the library leadership team in the development and delivery of innovative and quality services for Oxford College (www.emory.edu/OXFORD). The college, which provides a liberal arts intensive curriculum for the first two years of the Emory baccalaureate degree, is located 38 miles east of Atlanta on the original Emory campus in Oxford, Georgia.

Responsibilities:
The Digital Services Librarian will develop, market, and deliver a comprehensive suite of digital library services. The librarian will play an integral role in the Research Skills @ your library instructional program with the other librarians. To support the teaching, learning, and research of the community, the successful candidate will oversee development of innovative services and programs for students and faculty; assist with development of the library website; identify and analyze user requirements for systems and services; use knowledge of digital formats, current standards, human interface design, information search and retrieval protocols, and disciplinary trends to maintain and/or implement digital systems and repositories. The librarian in this position will provide reference services along with some scheduled night and weekend reference work. The individual will work with internal library teams, other College and University groups, and professional organizations.

Qualifications:
Required: a graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution; demonstrated effective teaching skills including proven abilities in designing and delivering discipline-related instructional sessions; knowledge of research methodology and experience in meeting the research needs of students and faculty; applied knowledge of emerging information technologies, including web-authoring tools and social networking software; self-motivation; flexibility; strong problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills; initiative and ability to conceive and carry out projects on a deadline including the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and effectively respond to the needs of a campus community that makes heavy demands on library services; ability to work in a collaborative team environment. Preferred: Demonstrated understanding of the application of technology as it relates to scholarship, teaching and learning; demonstrated ability to analyze user requirements to deliver technology solutions; knowledge of metadata standards; experience with digital file formats and software; familiarity with trends and issues related to preservation of digital content.
