This senior management position of Assistant Director for User and Research Services administers a major unit in the UWM Libraries and participates in library-wide planning and policy making.  We seek a highly motivated librarian to provide innovative leadership in both conceptualizing and implementing public and instructional services across a large, complex, and rapidly changing information landscape. This individual is expected to take a strong leadership role in developing new services and assessment strategies. Creating an environment of excellent customer service, fostering diversity in the workplace, and promoting sensitivity in service to users with diverse needs and backgrounds is paramount.

The Assistant Director provides oversight for library assessment through a team-based model to identify, recommend and implement library-wide assessment initiatives and support for assessment activities to determine the value and impact of library services and collections.

This position is involved with the campus Open Access initiatives and assists the Director in communicating the value of open access publishing, assisting faculty in e-publishing initiatives and developing the university’s strategies for distribution and curation of research.

The Assistant Director of Libraries for User and Research Services has a role in fostering positive and productive relationships with campus faculty, staff, and students, as well as with donors.  The responsibilities of this position are wide- ranging and demand a high degree of professionalism, including representing the library in a positive light to campus and community representatives. The position is part of the Library's senior management team (Executive Leadership Council). This position reports to the Director of Libraries.  


Qualifications
Required
·         Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent degree.
·         A minimum of five years of increasing administrative responsibility in an academic or research library.
·         Experience supervising professional staff.
·         Experience in balancing roles between paper-based research collections and digital information environments.
·         Strong commitment to diversity and customer service.
·         Understanding of trends affecting scholarly communications, cyber-infrastructure and current issues in research libraries.
·         Demonstrated ability to work effectively with library constituencies and staff in a collaborative approach.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, mentoring, and motivation.
  • Ability to manage/oversee an operation from start to finish with a high degree of independence and responsibility.
  • Dynamic and creative individual who thrives in a fast paced environment.

Preferred

·         Additional advanced degree.
·         Record of success in implementing innovative library services.
·         Experience with implementation of assessment measurements.
·         Experience in working with faculty to support institutional repository participation and developing data curation strategies.
·         Demonstrated professional growth through involvement in state and national organizations and/or research and publications.
·         Educational background in sciences.
