Information Literacy Librarian

The Illinois Wesleyan University Library invites applications for the position of Information Literacy Librarian, available August 1, 2009. This is a tenure track faculty position intended to provide leadership for the Library’s information literacy program that complements the work of our teaching faculty. The Ames Library offers a learning environment that is conducive to interaction, consultation, study, and reflection, dedicated to serving the scholarly needs of the IllinoisWesleyanUniversity community. Opened in 2002, the library facility comprises 103,000 square feet on five levels, with a diverse collection of over 400,000 volumes. The Thorpe Digital Center supports campus-wide digital resources and services, providing expert assistance with projects integrating video, audio, image and textual content. The Library personnel consist of nine full-time faculty librarians and twelve full-time support staff.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the University Librarian, the Information Literacy Librarian

• Coordinates and promotes the Library’s instruction program and its assessment;
• Actively pursues partnerships with campus programs and departments and seeks opportunities to integrate library resources and instruction into academic and special programs;
• Develops alternative service models to assist students and faculty and encourages use of the library as a resource;
• Seeks ways to provide training and support for library faculty to enhance their skills in working with students and with faculty to improve the undergraduate academic experience, both inside the classroom and beyond;
• Leads or participates in the design, development, maintenance, and evaluation of web-deliverable interactive learning objects, instructional modules, streaming audio/video, and other online instructional materials via the library’s website.

Shared Responsibilities:

• Participates in strategic planning, collection development, and general reference, including some nights and weekends;
• Serves as library liaison to negotiated academic units.

Required Qualifications:

• MLS degree from an ALA-accredited school or equivalent;
• Demonstrable enjoyment of and passion for teaching, investigating new lines of pedagogy and relationships to fully integrate information literacy into the campus community;
• Extensive knowledge of current issues of library instruction and pedagogy, and demonstrated skill in leading others in meeting the challenges of providing reference and instructional services;
• Skills to develop relevant and engaging instruction materials in collaboration with others;
• Knowledge of print and electronic reference sources, as well as skill in searching web-based resources;
• Strong commitment to excellence in serving undergraduates;
• An ability to understand and communicate the library user experience to others;
• Ability to work well independently and collaboratively with faculty members and colleagues, administrative staff, and students;
• Demonstrable evidence of effective initiative, project planning, management, and completion of innovative instruction programs;
• This is a faculty position requiring evidence of the ability to conduct scholarly research and engage in professional service.

Desired qualifications:

• One to three years post-MLS experience in teaching or instruction in an academic setting;
• Participation in the ACRL Immersion program;
• Strong liberal arts background;
• Excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills, initiative and flexibility;
• Experience with emerging technologies or social networking software as they apply to enhancing library services.

Appointment: Twelve-month, tenure-track appointment, TIAA-CREF and other benefits. We anticipate hiring at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Oakland University’s Kresge Library seeks a creative and energetic librarian to join us in advancing a student-centered information literacy program within a team-oriented, teaching library environment. This librarian will participate in course-integrated and course-related information literacy instruction and teaching, reference and research services, and collection development. With the creation of an Information Commons and a Technology Learning Center in 2009, the library will have an enhanced role in online learning. The design of online instruction, both web-based tutorials and content modules for delivery through learning management systems, will be a strong focus as the library seeks to expand its active online instruction program.

Required qualifications:

Rank, salary, benefits: This is a tenure-track, eight-month, bargaining-unit faculty appointment. Attainment of tenure is dependent upon job performance, scholarship, and service. Appointment may be made at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level; professional rank and salary will be determined by credentials and experience, with a minimum salary of $42,000.
