Northwestern University Library seeks a numeric and geospatial data librarian to oversee a unit within the Research and Information Services (RIS) Department.  This newly conceived unit is responsible for the development and implementation of outreach, educational, and research support services to faculty, students and staff users of numeric and geospatial data; business and management collections and services; and government information. To support these increasingly important areas of scholarly endeavor, members of the unit are charged with developing innovative, specialized services and collections that are connected by format and genre. Unit members will work in close alliance with other members of the RIS department to deliver both general and specialized research services and collections. The numeric and geospatial data librarian serves as the library’s selector for the numeric data collection, and manager of the numeric data collection budget.  Directly supervises three librarians, one data management specialist, and one geospatial and cartographic assistant.  

QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE: Master’s degree from an ALA accredited program in library and information science or equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience.  At least 4 years of experience working in an academic library setting, specializing in data and geospatial services.  Expertise with GIS.  Supervisory experience.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The University of California, Santa Cruz Library invites applications for an innovative, energetic and collaborative Assistant/Associate University Librarian for Collections and Library Information Systems (AUL/CLIS).

The position is a member of the Library's senior management team and has overall responsibility for Library collections, including collection development, the collection budget; acquisitions, cataloging, metadata creation, and serials management; digitization projects, preservation, and scholarly communication; and information systems. In addition, this position provides leadership for the Digital Library Program (DLP) which is dedicated to the production, maintenance, delivery, and preservation of a wide range of high-quality networked resources for scholars and students.

Job Description-Overview :
The Digital Collections and Archives (DCA) supports the teaching and research mission of Tufts University by ensuring the enduring preservation and accessibility of the university's permanently valuable records and collections. The DCA assists departments, faculty, and staff in managing records and other assets. The DCA collaborates with members of the Tufts community and others to develop tools to discover and access collections to support teaching, research, and administrative needs.
The Archivist for Digital Collections (ADC) oversees the formulation, preparation, and management of digital objects and collections for the DCA with a particular focus on developing tools and workflows to maximize efficiency in digital collections management. This work includes: database manipulation, scripting, supervising student workers, developing policies and procedures concerning digital objects and metadata, implementing appropriate standards and best practices, conducting quality assurance for digital collections, undertaking preservation activities, and managing the DCA’s locally-developed collections management system, CIDER. The ADC, working closely with the Director, acts as project manager for projects yielding digital collections including proposal development, and implementation and oversight of funded projects, and serves as a primary point of contact for faculty requiring assistance managing electronic research materials. The ADC collaborates closely with department colleagues on workflow development and implementation.
Job Description - Requirements : Basic Requirements:
  • ALA-accredited MLS with concentration in Archives Management or related advanced degree.
  • 3-5 years of related experience.
  • Experience with at least one programming or scripting language, such as Perl; some experience with database manipulation; knowledge of XML, HTML, CSS, digital imaging, and metadata and digital object creation and preservation standards. Ability to work in both Windows and Apple OSX environments. Comfort with learning new technologies on an ongoing basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to function in a highly collaborative environment with many simultaneous projects. Familiarity with digital repository systems, particularly Fedora, a plus. Knowledge of Ruby on Rails, MySQL, JQuery, Catalyst, a plus.

Data Management Specialist/Assistant Professor


Oregon State University Libraries invites applications for a newly-funded, full-time, 12-month, Assistant Professor/Data Management Specialist position. 

OSU Libraries seeks a self-motivated individual to establish a robust research data management program at Oregon State University. Reporting to the Head of the Center for Digital Scholarship and Services, the Data Management Specialist plays a central role in developing services and data management plans in support of the OSU research enterprise. The position collaborates with faculty, graduate students, academic units and research center personnel to identify, manage, describe, preserve and make research data available to appropriate internal and external audiences. The Data Management Specialist assists faculty and graduate students with writing data management plans required by funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation. The position identifies and recommends appropriate methods for data storage and retrieval and instructs researchers in contributing to and using data repository systems including ScholarsArchive@OSU.

This is a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, and the specialist is a member of the University Libraries faculty.

Required qualifications for the position:
A Masters degree by date of appointment from an ALA-accredited program or a foreign equivalent degree, or a Masters degree in a data-intensive discipline.   One year of relevant research data management and curation experience in an academic, scientific, or corporate setting.  An understanding of the research process as demonstrated by academic or work experience.   Demonstrated knowledge of issues and technical challenges related to data curation and management.  Familiarity with one or more current scientific data and metadata conventions.  Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff and students.  Willingness to engage in professional and scholarly activities.  Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Strong service orientation.  Strong technical skills and problem-solving abilities.  

Preferred Qualifications:
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.  Advanced degree in one of the sciences.  Experience with one or more commonly used data repository platforms (DSpace used locally). Experience in an academic library environment.  Grant writing experience and familiarity with federal funding requirements for data management.  Experience working with relational databases and XML.
