Social Sciences Librarian, Assistant or Associate Professor

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:   The Social Sciences Librarian is responsible for serving as a liaison between LIS and the following departments:  Historical Studies, Anthropology, Sociology & Criminal Justice, and, depending on qualifications, other social sciences departments such as Political Science and Public Administration & Policy Analysis. Working in a collaborative and collegial environment, the Social Sciences Librarian, who reports to the Director of the Research Commons, who reports to the Dean of Library and Information Services, will perform the following:
Primary responsibilities:

·         Consults with departmental or school liaisons in determining collection development decisions
·         Teaches workshops, information literacy classes, and university courses for departments or schools
·         Creates teaching modules, bibliographies, and a variety of finding aids
·         Provides reference services in person, by telephone, and through email and chat service
·         Works with the Department of Technical Services in the ordering of monographs, journals, online databases, etc.
·         Performs administrative functions, including reviewing policies and procedures related to the social sciences
·         Plans and expends material budget in the social sciences, within fiscal constraints, and in accordance with university goals and LIS objectives
·         Writes and submits grant proposals and administers grants for LIS and other university projects
·         Works closely with the department of Information Technology Services to deliver library services and resources to users via the web and other learning management systems.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT:  Assistant or Associate Professor, 12-month appointment, tenure-track, continuing contract.  Contract available:  June 1, 2011.

 SALARY RANGE:   Negotiable dependent upon credentials and experience, with a minimum salary of $43,000. Excellent fringe benefits.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:   The following requirements must be met by the Social Sciences Librarian:
1.      A Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school
2.      One year of experience in a library
3.      Knowledge of library and information systems, including online searching, bibliographic search systems (such as online catalogs, federated search engine and link resolvers), learning management systems and the Internet.
4.      Excellent communication and interpersonal relations skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment.
5.      Demonstrated teaching skills
6.      Ability to organize, coordinate and direct the activities of other staff and students.
7.      Demonstrated ability to meet LIS and University standards in librarianship, research and professional service in fulfillment of tenure requirements.
8.      Strong service orientation.
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:  One year of experience in an academic library and a specialized degree or coursework in a social sciences discipline.  Experience with the use of social networking tools in a library environment.

Social Sciences Librarian - Millar Library

General Description: The Social Sciences Librarian provides reference and information services for the University’s students and faculty as well as members of the general public, participates in a dynamic instructional program, consults and collaborates with scholars in specific academic units, including classroom and online instruction, and possibly for-credit courses, and selects information resources to support the instructional and research needs of a diverse institution. Some evening and weekend reference duty and/or instruction is required. Portland State expects its tenured faculty to contribute to faculty governance activities within the Library and the University, engage in community and professional service, and pursue an active publication and research agenda, seeking grants as appropriate. This full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position reports to the Assistant University Librarian for Public Services. All faculty members must adhere to University and Library policies and procedures, including Portland State University’s Professional Standards of Conduct. The Library expects all librarians to adhere to the current Reference and User Services Association’s (RUSA) Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and Information Service Providers.

Specific Responsibilities
• Provide reference and information services for the University’s students and faculty as well as members of the general public through work at the reference desk and through various information and communications technologies. Includes work during some evening and weekend hours.
• Participate in the Library’s information literacy and general instruction program
• Select books, serials, databases, and other information resources to support the instructional and research needs of students and scholars of the University in assigned disciplines, including Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, and Child & Family Studies. These assigned areas may change according to the needs of the University.
• Develop physical and online learning objects and guides, including tutorials.
• Consult and collaborate with assigned academic departments, assessing information needs and cultivating bridges for service and teaching.
• Maintain awareness of scholarly communications and copyright issues in general and within the assigned disciplines and contribute to advocacy efforts.
• Maintain current expertise through participation in workshops, classes, professional associations and networks, and through continued awareness of the scholarly literature.
• Keep colleagues informed of current issues and developments in the field related to the subject areas of responsibility.
• Establish short and long-range goals, objectives, and priorities, aligned with those of the Library and the University. Participate in continual program planning and assessment activities, including the collection of relevant data on inputs, outputs, and outcomes.
• Establish effective and productive communications with colleagues, administrators, and constituents.
• Contribute to the work of relevant committees and workgroups in the Library and the University, as well as to the work of professional associations, locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally.
• Pursue active publication and research agenda and meet expectations for faculty service and scholarship in accordance with the Library and University’s promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review guidelines.
• Occasionally direct the work of part-time student employees, volunteers, or interns.
• Support the mission, goals, and objectives of the University and the Library.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
• ALA-accredited MLS.
• Two years of full-time professional post-MLS experience in an academic library setting.
• Evidence of professional service and scholarship.
• Effective communications and collaborative skills.
• Experience with library systems and Internet applications.
• Collection development experience.
• Experience using digital and Web technologies in the delivery of library services.
• Experience integrating information literacy concepts into teaching.
• Experience developing reference and instruction services.
• Ability to successfully complete a background check.

Preferred Qualifications
• A graduate degree in a Social Sciences field
• Experience working as a librarian with responsibility for one or more Social Sciences fields.
• Flexibility and ability to work positively in a fast-paced, changing environment while collaborating with diverse colleagues, faculty, students, and the general public.
• Successful experience working with online learning applications.
• Experience with social sciences statistics and statistical analysis programs
• Experience serving Latino populations

Salary and Benefits:
Compensation and rank are commensurate with experience The salary range begins at a minimum of $61,320, and includes an excellent benefits package including fully paid health care, reduced tuition rates, and a generous retirement and vacation package.
