Instructional Design Librarian

Job Duties:  The B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library of LIU-Post seeks an Instructional Design Librarian to support student learning by working in partnership with library and teaching faculty to develop, design, implement and maintain general and course-specific library instruction materials, including but not limited to online learning objects and instructional modules.  The successful candidate will identify the information needs of both on-campus and blended/distance learning students, facilitate the integration and use of library literacy materials in course management systems and other online environments, and assess student learning outcomes.  The successful candidate must be able to learn, critically evaluate, and troubleshoot new technologies related to online teaching and learning to meet changing user needs, and support and train librarians and staff in the use of such technologies.  The librarian will also develop and conduct online and in-person library instruction sessions and may serve as a liaison to one or more academic departments.  Scheduled hours at the reference desk, including some evenings and weekend work, are required.  The successful candidate will work collaboratively and closely with the Coordinator of Instruction and the Instructional Technology Librarian to support the teaching and learning initiatives of the library.  The Instructional Design Librarian is a tenure-track, faculty status position.

Qualifications:   MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited library school and at least three years of public service, including instructional experience, in an academic library.  Knowledge of applications and technologies used in higher education instruction, including course management systems.  Coursework, degree, or experience in instructional design and/or educational technology, including knowledge of basic instructional design concepts (ADDIE, etc.).   Demonstrated interest in scholarly communication initiatives.  Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.  Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and users.  Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.   Ability to achieve tenure through effective job performance, service, and scholarship.   Additional graduate degree in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, or related field.  Demonstrated knowledge of production tools (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Audacity, and Camtasia).  Familiarity with ACRL Standards for Information Literacy.

Job Description
Bucknell University seeks to hire the position of Instructional Design Librarian who is directly responsible for supporting and adding value to the education Bucknell students receive. He/she blends the skill set of an academic librarian with the instructional designer's ability to apply instructional technology appropriately into the teaching and learning process. The Instructional Design Librarian is fully engaged with faculty and students providing relevant instruction, outreach and support for scholarship. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Research Services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Designs and develops digital learning objects and online instructional resources to support the university's information literacy and technological competencies learning goal.
• Assists faculty and staff in the design of online materials and learning objects.
• Serve as a Library and ITEC liaison to several academic departments.
• Works directly with faculty to realize the expectations of the new university learning goals and the resulting curricular changes.
• Provides specialized instruction and reference services for assigned subject areas.
  Collaborates with faculty to build and maintain collections to support the curriculum in the assigned areas. Uses collection assessment data in decision making.
• Through active assessment and program review, assures work and contributions are meeting work group, organization and University goals.
• Participates in outreach services, marketing and assessment program to improve services.
• Actively identifies possible points for technology integration into Research Services programs and work.
• Keeps abreast of changing technology and information resources and delivery mechanisms.
• Maintains a deep knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, and best practices in academic library outreach, instructional technology, instruction, information literacy, and information access and actively identifies relevant initiatives for local implementation.
• Develops and maintains an understanding of the aims and needs of the University's teaching, learning and research programs through active consultation with faculty, administrators and information technology peers.
• Collaborates with faculty and other ITEC liaisons to inspire and support academic users of information resources and instructional technology thereby enhancing teaching and learning.
• Teaches information literacy skills in the classroom, using current learning, teaching and information literacy theory and appropriate instructional technology.
• As appropriate, both leads and participates in key projects and strategic initiatives related to library instruction, outreach and student support.
• Is active in the library profession at both the national and regional level.

Qualifications:

ALA- accredited MLS degree required. Additional subject area master's degree preferred.

Knowledge of instructional design techniques and information literacy concepts.

Knowledge and experience with full range of contemporary web 2.0 technologies.

Familiarity with Blackboard or comparable learning management tools.

Ability to set priorities and manage work and deadlines independently required.

Ability to write clear, accurate communications and other documentation.

Ability to analyze data and make local decisions based on national and local trends and to design processes that enhance services while maximizing university resources.

Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with a high priority placed on the ability to effectively undertake instruction and other public speaking engagements.

Must be able to work cooperatively with others and accept direction from supervisors.
