Electronic Resources Librarian

Clemson University is seeking a flexible and enthusiastic Librarian to join its Acquisitions Unit.

This is a 12-month tenure-track position with faculty rank and status. Clemson library faculty participate in library-wide planning and governance, work in a shared decision-making environment, and are encouraged to be active in university service and professional organizations. Clemson University pursues an ambitious plan to become one of the nation’s top-20 public universities and is actively engaged in a University wide strategic planning process to establish priorities and strategies for the next decade. Position Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Acquisitions Unit Head,
  • Manages aspects of electronic acquisitions (which may include vendor ordering systems, collection analysis tools, e-books, and a link resolver).
  • Participates in implementation and maintenance of Innovative Millennium’s electronic resources management system (ERM).
  • Assists with collection of usage data for electronic resources.
  • Resolves electronic access problems for e-journals, databases, and e-books.
  • Develops vendor and publisher relationships, schedules and coordinates demos and training with account representatives.
  • Designs and maintains Acquisitions Unit web page.
  • Assists in serials cancellation and weeding projects (such as ongoing weeding of JSTOR collections).
  • Trains new selectors and serves as a resource for selectors in using tools such as YBP’s Gobi and the WorldCat collection analysis software. 
  • Maintains awareness of current and emerging trends and technologies pertaining to electronic acquisitions and electronic resources.
  • Participates in planning, decision making, and management of the Acquisitions Unit. 

Required Qualifications/Experience:
  • ALA-accredited master’s degree or foreign equivalent as determined by ALA recommended procedures   
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills

  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently, balance priorities, set and meet deadlines
  • Ability to meet the requirements of retention and tenure
  • Experience with standard computer applications, integrated library systems, and internet resources

Preferred Qualifications/Experience:

  • Experience in an academic or research library
  • Experience with electronic resources
  • Experience with III Millennium
  • Experience with budgeting or accounting
  • Training or supervisory experience

Salary and Benefits: Minimum: $42,000; rank and competitive salary based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience. State of South Carolina, TIAA-CREF, or other retirement plans available. Various medical plans, dental plans, 18 days annual leave, 15 days sick leave, 12 paid holidays, and liberal professional development leave are provided. Clemson University allows employees to earn up to six credit hours free of charge each semester. Library faculty receive an individual stipend for travel or other professional development activity.

Library: Clemson University Libraries employs 30 librarians and over 70 support staff and uses III’s Millennium system. The Acquisitions Unit consists of 2 Librarians and 12 support staff. Unit responsibilities include acquisition, payment, and licensing of materials in all formats.

Electronic Resources Librarian

Western State College of Colorado seeks a dynamic, service-oriented librarian to provide leadership in organizing and providing access to the library’s electronic resources collection (databases and journals). This position is also responsible for managing the library’s web site using the Plone content management system. In collaboration with the technical services librarian and staff from the integrated library system’s consortium (Marmot Library Network), the electronic resources librarian will participate in developing a next-generation online public access catalog. This position also manages the college’s federal and state depository program. Additional duties include staffing the reference desk in rotation with other library staff; hiring, training, and supervising student staff as needed; providing virtual reference services; and participating with other library staff in collection development, committee work, and setting goals and objectives for the library. Night and weekend work is required in rotation with other librarians. The electronic resources librarian reports to the director of library services.

Western Kentucky University is seeking an Electronic Resources Librarian, reporting to the Head of Library Public Services with collaborative report to the Head of Library Technical Services. This is a 10-month tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The university is in Bowling Green, Kentucky, an attractive and progressive community with a metro population of 109,000 one hour from Nashville and two hours from Louisville. Duties: coordinate selection, acquisition, and maintenance of electronic resources; oversee licensing, compliance, statistical reports, access, and other technology issues; chair library-wide electronic resources committee; represent libraries on state-wide committees selecting electronic resources; assist with institutional repository and other digital initiatives; provide reference assistance, collection development, and research instruction in areas of specialization; and related duties as assigned. Research and publication required for promotion and tenure.

Requirements: ALA-accredited MLS plus an additional graduate degree; experience managing electronic resources; knowledge of HTML or Web development software; openness to emerging technologies; reference experience; ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.

Preferred: Experience with client-server applications, Javascript, and Voyager integrated library system; expertise in English, Philosophy, Religion, Music, Computer Science, or related areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES: As a member of the Acquisitions Department, the ER Librarian takes the leadership role in the procurement, licensing and management of electronic information resources purchased by the UM Libraries as well as the shared consortial resources purchased for the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) and the Maryland Digital Library (MDL) communities. Responsible for the negotiation and administration of new and existing licensing for electronic resources by maintaining a database for tracking electronic resource licenses and licensing expressions, consulting with University Counsel to resolve license and contract issues. In charge of researching license agreements in order to place new subscription orders, developing and maintaining guidelines for standard licensing terms, monitoring subscriptions in relation to existing license expirations and renewals, reviewing the impact of current licensing on post cancellation archival access, collecting usage statistics, arranging for registration and activation of electronic subscriptions, and troubleshooting e-access problems reported by patrons and other library staff. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Required:
· ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association.
· One year of library experience with technical services work, including cataloging, systems, collection development, or serial acquisitions management.
· Experience working with an automated acquisitions system or an automated library system.
· Ability to manage tasks in response to varying time pressures with shifting priorities and changing constraints.
· Demonstrated ability to anticipate customer needs and seek ways of providing satisfactory solutions.
· Good interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to communicate clearly with all persons potentially affected by the scope of the work.
· Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to details is essential, as is accuracy.

Preferred: Three or more years of serials or acquisition experience in an academic or research library, at least one of which is as a professional librarian. Experience with acquisitions processes for electronic resources (licensing, access provision, electronic resource management).

Electronic Resources Librarian

The Electronic Resources and Serials Management (ERSM) staff works together as a collaborative, service-oriented team that strives to ensure faculty, staff, and students have easy access to the broadest range of available research publications supported by the Library. Under the general direction of the Department Head, the Electronic Resources Librarian plays a leadership role with this team whose activities span the acquisition, licensing, access management, renewals, record maintenance and troubleshooting for electronic resources. S/he works closely with colleagues throughout the Library, including the office of the AUL for Scholarly Communication and Special Collections, who share the goal to support the teaching and research mission of the University, but with a special focus on providing robust and consistent access to publications for all Cornell Library user communities.


Duties and responsibilities:

Participates in system-wide e-resources and serials management and policy development in support of Cornell University Library and Library Technical Services (LTS) priorities. Contributes to a wide variety of initiatives pertaining to e-access and serials. Supervises 3 FTE staff working whose primary assignments are involved with the implementation, maintenance and front-line service of electronic resources collections. Negotiates and executes licensing agreements with information providers. Develops and implements plans for the efficient and effective processing of records for electronic resources including the recording and maintenance of licensing details for the collections. Evaluates the availability and quality of bibliographic records to provide and/or enhance access to Cornell University Library’s electronic resources.
Works with the Office of the AUL for Scholarly Resources and Special Collections on the analysis and ongoing appropriations for electronic resources. Serves as a member or LTS liaison to collection development groups. Participates and plans training and continuing education programs for selectors regarding e-resources workflows, general licensing needs and usage statistics.

Requirements:

Required: ALA accredited MLS or an equivalent masters degree with applicable academic library experience. Demonstrated experience with issues and practices involved in developing and maintenance of e-resources collections, including licensing and a knowledge of publishing practices and trends. General knowledge of a range of software applications supporting access to online collections and associated technologies. Excellent communication and analytic skills including the ability to work well within a team environment with diverse groups of library staff. Interest in professional development activities, including research and participation in professional organizations.

Desired: Previous experience using library management and electronic resources systems. Previous supervisory experience, particularly in electronic resources or other technical services activities or interest and/or potential to take on supervisory responsibilities. Working knowledge of cataloging principles, tools and batch loading of records. Prior professional experience in an academic or special library.
