Dean of Library Services


Missouri State University located in Springfield, Missouri, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Library Services.  The successful candidate will possess the vision and leadership qualities necessary to move an already strong library to the next level.  The Dean provides academic, administrative, and fiscal leadership to the Libraries and reports directly to the Provost.  He or she will encourage faculty development, build partnerships with external constituents and public organizations, engage in fundraising, and facilitate the Public Affairs mission of the University as it relates to the University Libraries.

The candidate selected must have a strong record of academic leadership in librarianship and higher education, must have an ALA-accredited master’s degree, and must possess credentials that qualify him/her for appointment as a full professor at Missouri State University.

The ideal candidate will possess the following minimum qualifications:

·        Master’s degree  or higher, in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution and credentials consistent with appointment at the rank of full professor at Missouri State University

·        Commitment to excellence in librarianship, teaching, research and service

·        Proven leadership and successful management of library professionals  in an academic setting;

·        Demonstrated ability to facilitate working relationships across the University and the broader library community

·        Interest in and commitment to fundraising, alumni relations and development activities

·        Evidence of commitment to diversity

·        Experience in  operational and fiscal management within a library environment
Missouri State University expects to select a new Dean of Library Services during the Spring 2012 semester to assume full-time responsibilities prior to the start of the Fall 2012 semester.  The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Dean of library Services

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (www.umassd.edu) invites applications and nominations for the role of Dean of Library Services. The Dean will plan and develop library and information resource programs, systems, services, and infrastructure that support the University’s growing research agenda and its plans to transition its Carnegie classification from Masters/L to Doctoral/Research. S/he will be responsible for developing a critical university resource, building a collegial and collaborative working environment that is responsive to the needs of both students and faculty, and guiding a $40 million library renovation project from the conclusion of design development through a planned two-year construction. The Dean reports to the Provost and will serve as a senior member of the Provost’s management team.

Located in the heart of the picturesque south coast of Massachusetts, only a short drive from Cape Cod, Providence, and Boston, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is ranked among the top northern public universities by U.S. News and World Report. As one of the five campuses of the University of Massachusetts system, UMass Dartmouth offers a broad range of baccalaureate and graduate degrees vital to the economic, social, and cultural well being of its region. It has an enrollment of over 9,000 students in 38 undergraduate and 33 graduate programs, including 7 at the Ph.D. level.

The Dean of Library Services will bring an understanding of and ability to articulate a well-founded vision for a 21st century research university library and evidence of substantial leadership and achievement within a higher education library. The Dean will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the general public. An MLS from an ALA accredited institution is required, along with five years of progressively responsible higher education library administrative experience. A doctorate or second graduate degree is preferred, as is senior administrative experience at an ARL library.
