Branch Manager


The person in this position must have excellent supervisory skills to manage the day-to-day operation of a neighborhood branch.  It is essential that the person in this position be able to direct the activities of others, while maintaining excellent customer relations skills.  Must have superior abilities in the area of reference and reader’s advisory.  Also, will have the knowledge of reference tools, bibliographic sources, cataloging and classification systems and the ability to apply this knowledge to assigned areas of responsibility.  Should possess organizational and report writing skills, attention to detail is required.  Additionally, operational support is needed in the areas of circulation, statistical reporting, opening and closing of the branch, collection development, and presentations and directing daily branch operations.  Must have strong professional skills in community outreach and programming.  Should be able to meet deadlines and follow SLPL Policies and Procedures.  Experience working with diverse populations is a plus.  Verbal, written and computer skills are essential.  An MLS Degree from an ALA accredited program and three years of library experience is required.

Branch Manager

The St. Louis Public Library is looking for a Branch Manager to join the management team.


MLS degree from an ALA Accredited Library School and a minimum of 3-5 years public library managerial experience.

The person in this position must have supervisory skills to manage the day-to-day operation of a neighborhood branch. Must have superior abilities in the area of reference and readers advisory. Also, will have the knowledge of reference tools, bibliographic sources and classification systems and the ability to apply this knowledge to assigned areas of responsibility. Should possess excellent organizational skills; report writing skills and attention to detail. Additionally, operational support is needed in the areas of circulation, statistical reporting, opening and closing of the branch, collection development, making presentations and directing the daily branch operations. Must have strong professional skills in community outreach and adult programming. Should be able to meet deadlines and follow SLPL Policies and Procedures. Experience working with diverse populations is a plus. Verbal, written and computer skills are essential. Must have a willingness to provide customer service in a small but busy branch in a transitional neighborhood.

Job Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for the operation of a branch library, central library section/department, a technical services section or coordination of a system wide library program. As Manager of one of San Antonio Public Library's twenty-three branch libraries, this position will supervise staff and be responsible for the operation of a branch library, ensuring that library patrons receive the information and library materials they need. Exercises direct supervision over lower level Librarians and assigned support staff.

Essential Job Functions

  • Leads branch staff in providing excellent library service
  • Directs the overall operation of the branch
  • Formulates goals, policies, plans, and procedures for assigned area of responsibility
  • Selects, supervises, trains, monitors, and coaches branch employees
  • Directs, coordinates, and schedules the activities of branch library
  • Monitors and evaluates the work of assigned staff
  • Maintains the branch's collection of library materials
  • Maintains work records and prepares reports
  • Participates in library committee work
  • Monitors and evaluates all library services
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required


Job Requirements
Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university; Three years experience as a professional librarian; One year in a supervisory capacity; Substitution Ratio: No substitution for education allowed; Any applicant selected for this position must have a background check completed with results satisfactory to the City of San Antonio and Certification Training;
