Associate or Full Professor – Digital Curation

Description: We seek a colleague whose research and teaching interests focus on how records, data, and digital information can be managed, organized, represented, and preserved in ways that meet critical societal and organizational needs.  Contexts might include government, industry, advocacy/service organizations, science, social science and humanities data repositories, and cultural heritage information institutions, among others.

The program in the Curation and Management of Digital Assets is designed to facilitate advanced research in the digital environment and to enhance student educational experience and professional advancement.  Areas of particular professional experience sought in candidates include:

The iSchool enrolls over 500 students in four degree programs: Ph.D., a Master of Library Science (MLS), a Master of Information Management (MIM), and a Master of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Faculty members across these programs teach as well as conduct collaborative research that takes advantage of this interdisciplinary breadth. The iSchool is internationally known for its vibrant programs in archives, records management, and library and information studies.  Members of the faculty hold joint appointments in Business, Education, English, the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, and the Information Policy and Access Center.

This is a 9-month tenure appointment, with opportunities for summer teaching and grant-funded summer research.  Salary and benefits are competitive based upon qualifications and experience.

Curator, Dr. You-Bao Shao Overseas Chinese Documentation and Research Center

Minimum Qualifications:

Librarian - Reference Services Coordinator (tenure track)

Eastern Washington University Libraries seek a motivated individual with a strong commitment to student success and retention to fill the position of Reference Services Coordinator Librarian (Assistant Professor, tenure track). This position is an 11 month tenure-track library faculty appointment working and paid over 12 months and will perform professional responsibilities in librarianship, scholarship, and service.

Responsibilities in librarianship will focus on reference and instruction activities primarily at the Cheney Campus, and on coordination of the EWU Libraries' reference services. Reporting to the Faculty Chair, this individual will provide leadership in reference services in a changing and dynamic environment. The Reference Services Coordinator will collaborate with colleagues, service coordinators and library leadership regarding public services.

Position Responsibilities:

Reference
- Provide leadership in development, coordination, promotion, delivery and evaluation of the Library's reference service for both on-campus and distance students.
- Make recommendations to the Dean, Faculty Chair, and colleagues on changes in policies, resources and services necessary to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff.
- Participate in campus, regional and statewide reference-related initiatives.
- Coordinate public service projects to support library and university initiatives (e.g. EWU Learning Commons).
- Oversee daily operations of the main reference desk and coordinate reference desk schedules. Duties include managing, monitoring, and scheduling the virtual reference service, QuestionPoint.
- Analyze reference transactions data and creates reports to evaluate the effectiveness of reference services.
- Provide general and specialized reference, instruction, and research assistance.
- Apply reference service best practices in accordance with RUSA Guidelines and cultivates awareness of current trends in academic libraries.
Collection Development
- Manage online and print reference collections.
- Oversee selection and assessment of reference resources.

Instruction
- Act as library liaison to assigned departments.
- Provide information literacy instruction for assigned liaison areas and the general curriculum according to the ACRL Information Literacy Standards.
- Travel to off-campus locations for distance education programs as needed.
- Create and maintain online tutorials and research guides (including LibGuides) to support outreach and instructional initiatives.

Leadership
- Supervise one staff member who oversees the hiring, training and supervising of student reference desk assistants.
- Delegate responsibilities as appropriate while maintaining an atmosphere conducive to job productivity and satisfaction.
- Foster employee empowerment and growth through staff development with continuing education opportunities.

Other Duties
- Explore and develop funding opportunities through grant and proposal writing.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

E-Learning Librarian

University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian

University Archives and Special Collections (UASC) is comprised of two distinct collections--the official archives of the University, in multiple formats, and some 30 distinctive special collections in a variety of different subjects.

Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian position provides leadership within the department in accordance with the Libraries’ goals and strategic planning; facilitates communication about UASC within the University Libraries, throughout the University community, and to the general public of current and potential users. 

This is a tenure-track library Associate Professor faculty position. Applicants must hold a master's degree from an ALA accredited school of library/ information science, preferably with a concentration in archives or some advanced training in archives, manuscripts, and special collections. A second post-baccalaureate degree or similar proof of advanced study is required for tenure. The successful candidate will also have 3-5 years of significant experience in an archives or special collections environment, including at least three years of supervisory and budgetary responsibilities, as well as a broad understanding of archival related activities in an academic research library setting,
Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinates all aspects of Special Collections & Archives operations, including the ongoing acquisition of relevant material; preservation, conservation and management of collections; maintenance of intellectual control; and development of access and usage policies appropriate to both physical and virtual collections. 
  • Provides overall supervisory oversight of staff, including full-time and part-time librarians/archivists, an administrative assistant, and student employees.
  • Oversees the formulation and periodic review of collection development and materials selection policies and profiles; oversees policies relating to the use of both collections.
  • Oversees specialized collection management functions, including the handling of gift materials, selection and de-selection collection processes, identification of potential conservation and preservation materials in the general collection, and collection analysis. 
  • Maintains a strategic development plan that will encompass growth and enhancement of the library's physical and digital collections documenting the history and functions of the university.
  • Monitors resources within the department, including faculty/staff, budget, equipment, space and physical facilities. 
  • Works collaboratively with the staff to set priorities, create strategic plans and documentation, and meet project deadlines.
  • Fosters communication and collegiality within the department and with other departments in the library. 
  • Collaborates with Adelphi faculty and staff and all divisions of the Libraries to develop digital collections, including both digitized and born-digital resources; establish digitization priorities for print and audiovisual collections; and ensure that digitization projects are successfully completed. 
  • Supports a high level of public service and dedication to the Libraries’ mission within the department. 
  • Promotes the use of primary resources within university courses and research. 
  • Cultivates relationships with donors and prospective donors of unique special collections and archival materials. 
  • Collaborates with department faculty/staff and library leadership to identify potential grant and funding sources, prepare required applications, and manage funded projects. 
  • Works closely with department faculty/staff to develop programs and exhibits that will promote collections and contribute to the mission and vision of the Libraries and the University. 


Other Responsibilities:

  • Collection development and liaison responsibilities for one or more schools or departments. 
  • Participation in the Libraries' information literacy program. 
  • Provision of services at Swirbul Library's main reference desk including occasional evenings and weekends.

  • Active participation in scholarly activities including research and publishing, as required for reappointment and tenure.
QUALIFICATIONS: (a) knowledge of standards-based archival description and metadata schema, such as EAD, XML, MODS, and Dublin Core, (b) excellent communication and interpersonal skills, (c) the ability to work effectively in a collegial environment; (d) evidence of ability to meet criteria for promotion and tenure, and (e) experience with digitization projects, archival database management systems, and website construction. 

Other desirable qualifications include: (a) familiarity with ContentDM and Archivist’s Toolkit, (b) experience with records retention policies and schedules, exhibits, and writing grant proposals, (c) familiarity with basic preservation and conservation standards for archival and rare books collections, and (d) demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and implement effective programs, complex projects, and services.

Digital Projects Librarian, University Libraries

Kent State University Libraries seeks an experienced and creative Digital Projects Librarian (DPL) who will be responsible for the research, planning, execution and management of digital projects throughout the University Libraries’ environment. The DPL will work with programmers and applications in a complex production environment. S/he will work closely with Library and University-wide clients, colleagues and team members to understand and satisfy complex digital project requirements and provide quality technical solutions to the University community.

The position is a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty position that reports to the Head of Systems. The incumbent will be required to meet reappointment, promotion and tenure standards. Anticipated appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Minimum hiring salary: $58,220.

Responsibilities:

1. Provides technical expertise and project management support in the creation and maintenance of digital collections on various platforms, including the Libraries’ institutional repository.

2. Works to integrate digital collections and projects into University Libraries’ systems, collections, and services.

3. Coordinates cross-departmental digital project workflows and participates in identifying digital collection development opportunities.
4. Selects, designs, deploys and maintains digital repository and publishing services, storage solutions, and digital library collection-related services, tool sets, and applications.

5. Supports strategic creation of digital content, digital conversion, interoperability of digital platforms, management and archiving of datasets, integration of digital resources into public web sites and learning management systems, and integration opportunities for digital content.

6. Works with the University Archivist, Special Collections Librarian, Collection Management Librarian, Metadata/Catalog Librarian, Systems Staff, and others to create and maintain workflows for transferring and ingesting data into the institutional repository and other systems and applications that support digital projects.

7. Serves as a technical expert for Library and University needs for digital archiving in support of the policies and processes of the University Archivist and the Head of Special Collections.

8. Leads and supports projects that collect or highlight research in digital formats, such as an Undergraduate Research digital forum collection.

9. Incorporates appropriate design principles, information architectures, coding standards, system protocols and emerging technologies into the Library's various open source web-based systems and projects in order to support digital projects.

10. Develops strategies to support the data management needs of Kent State faculty, working with Public Service librarians and various Kent State units. Identifies necessary technical infrastructure for data management solutions. Networks with campus data managers supporting research programs. Cultivates partnerships with library and non-library organizations sharing a common interest in research data curation.

11. Keeps current on trends and developments in digital collections, institutional repository, academic publishing, and data curation.

12. Works on library, university, consortium, and professional committees and working groups to set standards and develop and select services in the digital projects arena.

Required Qualifications:

1. ALA-accredited MLS, MIS, MLIS or equivalent.

2. Knowledge of emerging technology trends related to digital collections.

3. Familiarity with digital project management.

4. Familiarity with digital preservation practices and digital collections software.

4. Working knowledge of XML in general and MARCXML in particular.

6. Experience with web programming languages like PHP, Python, Ruby, XSLT, XHTML, Perl.

7. Experience with project management, digital projects, and institutional repository development.

8. Ability to work on a Unix/Linux platform to install, configure and test applications.

Sr. Support Analyst

OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. is a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world's information and reducing information costs. Tens of thousands of libraries around the world use OCLC services to locate, acquire, catalog, lend and preserve library materials. We are currently seeking candidates for a Sr. Support Analyst position at our Corporate Headquarters in Dublin (Columbus), Ohio.

Applies experience and technical knowledge in order to provide expert and second level support to the CSD team and the OCLC user community for OCLC's online systems, distributed systems, micro-software, and access methods using both proven and creative solutions.

  1. Answer incoming support requests and second level referrals in a blended support environment, and place outgoing proactive calls, resolving or coordinating resolution for all requests presented.
  2. Assist and mentor less experienced staff in a wide range of support topics.  Assist in evaluating the technical expertise of CSD staff, identify individual or group skill gaps, and provide training in order to improve our ability to provide consistent, efficient solutions for users.
  3. Participate in new product implementation activities to help ensure CSD support readiness and better product quality/usability.  This includes independent technical, functional and quality testing, procuring or developing new facilities or systems needed for support, reviewing user documentation, creating support documentation, developing/executing staff training curriculum.
  4. Discover, research, test, and document new, valuable support information for the CSD Knowledge Base in order to ensure that answers and solutions are consistent, accurate, and more readily available to users and Regional Networks.  Position has direct responsibility for KB content control.
  5. Assist the corporation in understanding customer responses to specific product offerings and desires for product enhancements, so that OCLC can continue to improve the functionality and quality of its products/services.
  6. Act as a liaison with other sections, departments, divisions, or organizations, so that OCLC users can rely on CSD to coordinate support efforts on their behalf as needed to provide solutions and answers.

Job Requirements
  1. Position requires a Bachelor of Science degree in a business or computer based discipline, or an equivalent academic/work experience combination
  2. 3+ years experience or equivalent expertise providing technical and functional troubleshooting/support for OCLC’s online services, micro-software, distributed systems, and telecommunications access methods
  3. Ability to install and configure OCLC’s desktop and server software products for use with any supported operating system and telecommunications environment, including the ability to write, debug, and install software for accessing and operating those products and services (e.g., macro and scripting languages.)
  4. Excellent knowledge of third party software and environments, especially MS-Windows and communications software
  5. Excellent knowledge of Z39.50 clients, and connectivity via IP recognition or scripting software.
  6. Experience resolving problems operating OCLC products with third party local systems, local area networks, firewall/ proxy servers, and other Internet and Web issues.
  7. Strong problem solving skills.
  8. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  9. Ability to handle high stress situations effectively with tact and diplomacy.
  10. Ability to troubleshoot and support telecommunications facilities with users and vendors, including analog and digital lines, asynchronous modems, digital service units, and Internet protocol, connectivity and tools.
  11. Working knowledge of personal computer and network hardware such as: interrupt structures, memory management techniques, bus technologies, servers, SLIP connections, LAN cabling, terminal servers, communications ports and protocols; including the ability to install, configure, operate, diagnose, and oversee the repair of desktop and communications hardware.
  12. Spanish / Portuguese written and verbal skills.
  13. Knowledge of UNIX operating systems.
  14. Experience working as a system librarian or in an equivalent role and/or experience operating or supporting an ILS system considered a strong plus.

Director of the Standish Library

Siena College invites applications for the position of Director of the Standish Library. Applications will be accepted from October 15, 2013 through December 15, 2013. The position has an expected start date of Summer 2014.

The successful candidate should provide vision, strategic direction, and leadership to the library and should demonstrate expertise in developing and implementing technological innovations, managing library operations and budgets, and the ability to adapt to changing academic environments. The Director will be responsible for hiring and supervising a library staff of library faculty, other professional staff, and support staff. The Director of the Standish Library will be at the rank of Librarian.

Duties and Responsibilities


  1. Plan, develop, manage and assess the effectiveness of the Library’s educational services which includes materials selection and use, instruction, research assistance, media services, and resources and facilities provided to Siena’s students and faculty;
  2. Coordinate the Library’s services and resources with academic departments, campus administrative units, campus committees, outside vendors and institutions, networks, and consortia;
  3. Direct the human resource management of the Library, including assignments of duties, hiring, supervision and evaluation. Serve in the role of dean/department head in matters related to library faculty; 
  4. Prepare, monitor, authorize and assess budget allocations including personnel, facilities, information technology, strategic planning, materials, equipment and contract services; develop grants; and solicit gifts;
  5. Develop and maintain contacts with vendors, networks, consortia and other cooperative ventures to improve delivery of services and resources to Siena’s students and faculty;
  6. Oversee operations of records management, automation systems, databases, college archives and art curatorial services; and
  7. Participate in the Library’s instructional and research assistance programs.
  8. Possess a Master’s degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution. A second master’s degree preferred
  9. Minimum of eight (8) years of academic library experience
  10. Record of achievements evincing a range of administrative and leadership abilities
  11. Working knowledge of library technologies and academic library trends 
  12. Record of cooperation and collaboration with library staff, other campus units, and consortia

Community Library Manager


The Contra Costa County Library is recruiting to fill one vacant 32 hour Community Library Manager position in Oakley. California Contra Costa County operates over 26 community libraries within a 750 square mile area and serves close to 1 million urban, suburban and rural customers with an annual circulation exceeding 7.4 million.

Community Library Managers are responsible for day-to-day administration and operation of a full service community library.  Responsibilities include applying individual judgment and influence to manage human, financial and physical resources in a community library and supervise the activities of professional, technical and/or clerical level positions involved in library support and service activities; plan, develop and implement community library goals, objectives, policies and procedures; collaborate with City staff in the planning and development of library programs and services; assess community library needs and formulate proposals and policies and other duties as assigned.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may remain in effect for six (6) months and may be used to fill future part-time and full time vacancies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Possession of a Master of Library Science degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association, or equivalent curriculum.
Experience: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent professional/supervisory library experience.
OR
Three (3) years full-time equivalent experience working in a library, which may include two (2) years as support staff, technician or paraprofessional, and at least one (1) year at a professional/supervisory level.
