E-Science Librarian


Clemson University Library seeks an innovative and motivated professional to work with a team of vibrant library faculty to envision and implement the library’s E-Science initiatives and serve as faculty liaison for the new institutional repository. Reporting to the head of the Reference Unit, the E-Science librarian will provide research assistance, instruction, collection management, and outreach services for students, faculty, and staff in the physical and biological sciences. This is a 12-month tenure-track position with faculty rank and status.

Requirements:
  • ALA-accredited MLS degree or equivalent.
  • Experience providing research services in the sciences, or a bachelor’s degree in a physical or biological science discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

Head, Digital Initiatives


The Ohio State University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Head, Digital Initiatives to lead the evolution of digital library services and collections that support the research and teaching needs of the University.  The successful candidate will work collaboratively and consultatively within the Libraries’ Information Technology Division, as well as across other appropriate areas of the Libraries, to provide vision for, and build, a cohesive and extensible suite of discovery, access, preservation, curation, security, repository, archival and storage services. 

The Digital Initiatives program collaboratively develops strategies, and plans, implements, and supports projects to advance the creation and integration of digital library services and digital collections into the academic enterprise.  Key partners in this endeavor include the Libraries’ digital repository, publishing, preservation and reformatting, and special collections programs, as well as other potential campus partners.  This position reports to the Associate Director for Information Technology,  as part of a division that provides web applications, information management, discovery systems, and technical infrastructure.  This is a tenure track faculty position. 

Responsibilities
  • Leads creation and articulation of an evolving digital initiatives environment in alignment with the Libraries’ mission and strategic plan and with ongoing input from key stakeholders throughout the organization.
  • Guides the development and implementation of digital asset and data management strategies, policies, standards, and procedures that support discovery, access, management, storage, and preservation of the Libraries' digital assets and resources.
  • Works collaboratively within the Libraries’ Information Technology Division to articulate and implement an evolving technology services environment; actively participates in the design and development of the technical architecture for digital library applications, middleware, systems, and services.
  • Works with appropriate staff to create, maintain and improve the Libraries’ locally developed and hosted digital services.  Leads cross-divisional digital projects, expedites their completion, and creates documentation for project-related activities.  Acts as a liaison for digitization and metadata projects with other teams within the Libraries and/or other campus groups.
  • Transforms digital library initiatives through an iterative, data-informed, and test-driven process that emphasizes performance, sustainability, and usability.
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge in the identification, assessment, and implementation of trends and emerging technologies that strategically advance the Libraries' mission related to digital initiatives and online scholarship.
  • Engages in national and consortial efforts in the digital library domain, and seeks mutually beneficial partnerships and collaborations with peer institutions and in the private sector.
  • Works collegially with all personnel to achieve the Library’s mission and strategic goals.  Participates actively in library-wide initiatives and serves on committees, project teams, and task forces. 
  • Contributes to developments in the field of digital librarianship through active professional engagement and research, presenting, and publishing in appropriate venues. 


Qualifications (Required)
  • ALA accredited MLS/MLIS degree or equivalent.
  • Experience in managing digital projects/services and/or digital collections.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently, as well as collaboratively, plan, coordinate, and implement effective digital projects, including managing multiple and simultaneous projects.
  • Demonstrated success in collaborative problem solving and working across organizational boundaries. 
  • Experience with current digital collection architectures, technologies, standards, platforms, and products.  
  • Knowledge and understanding of emergent and best practices, standards, issues and trends relating to digital initiatives in the library environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to meet the requirements of promotion and tenure; commitment to professional development and service.

Qualifications (Desired)
  • Minimum of three years professional experience in managing digital projects, digital services, and/or digital collections in an academic or large public institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change, and identify and implement new technologies, services and work methods; ability to learn and evaluate new technologies quickly.
  • Competency in analysis, budgeting and planning, assessment and evaluation, and service management.
  • Knowledge of the standards and technological framework for digital preservation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current information technology standards and developments in libraries and higher education.
  • Working knowledge of, and experience with, a wide variety of media including text, music, still images, audio and video.
  • Knowledge of data and metadata standards prevalent in libraries.

Rank/Salary
This is a full-time, permanent, 12-month tenure-track faculty appointment. Salary and faculty rank are dependent on qualifications and experience.

Director of ALA Office for Diversity (OFD) and the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS)


The American Library Association is seeking a Director of the ALA Office for Diversity (OFD) and the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS).  The Director has two distinct and separate staffs to support OFD and OLOS in achieving their units’ missions. 

ALA OFD provides active consultation, facilitation and training on diversity issues; manages the ALA Spectrum Scholarship Program, Spectrum Doctoral Fellowship Program and other diversity recruitment programs; and serves as a key resource on professional issues related to the value and impact of diversity.  The Director works with and supports the ALA Committee on Diversity and its sub committees and serves as the ALA’s primary liaison to the five associations of ethnic librarians (AILA, APALA, BCALA, CALA and REFORMA).

ALA OLOS identifies, promotes, and provides training and information resources on library services that support equitable access to knowledge and information in libraries, including adult and family literacy and services inclusive of traditionally underserved populations.  The Director works with the OLOS Advisory Committee and related subcommittees.  OLOS also provides liaison to the ALA Committee on Literacy; the Committee on Rural, Native and Tribal Libraries of All Kinds; the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT); the ALA Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table; and the ALA Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table, which includes the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee.

The ALA OFD/OLOS Director has both an external and internal leadership responsibility.  S/he is a principal representative of ALA to individuals and institutions addressing diversity (through recruitment, education and professional development, and organizational change), equity of access, and adult and family literacy.  This is also a management position with overall responsibility for the operational and fiscal management (including some revenue generation) of two ALA offices, under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Executive Director, ALA.  The ALA/OFD-OLOS Director supervises a staff of 4 FTE and a total budget of $480,000 (excluding grants), plus several grant programs and special projects.  The Director is responsible for advising on ALA plans and preparing recommendations on priorities, programs and other issues; meets regularly with other ALA managers; and communicates, cooperates and coordinates ALA/OFD and ALA/OLOS activities with those of other ALA groups.  The ALA/OFD-OLOS Director is a member of the ALA Member Programs and Services Team.

Qualifications:  A Master’s degree from an ALA-recognized program in LIS is strongly preferred; other graduate-level education will be considered.  Minimum of 7-10 years preferably in a nonprofit and/or association environment.  General knowledge of issues related to diversity, adult and family literacy (including English-language learners) and equity of access is required.  Collaborative management skills and strong written and verbal communication skills are required.

Salary range:  Negotiable from mid $70’s depending on experience and qualifications.

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a research unit of The New York Public Library, seeks an innovative experienced Assistant Director to lead the Public Affairs Department and assist the Executive Director in:

Head of Professional Programs

Coordinator of Research Services


The Catherwood, Hotel and Management libraries seek enthusiastic, qualified candidates for the professional position of Coordinator of Research Services.   The Coordinator of Research Services leads the development, implementation, and assessment of exceptional research support programs and services to the three schools served by these libraries, as well as the broader Cornell community.  In addition, the successful candidate will be part of a team providing targeted public services support to the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. The position is part of the Research and Learning Services department responsible for providing research, teaching and learning, outreach, and collection development services across the consolidated libraries serving Cornell’s ILR, Hotel Administration, and Management Schools.  The Coordinator will participate collaboratively in the on-going development of the department and its services and serves on the team of coordinators who lead RLS activities.  In 2010, the Management Library consolidated with the Nestlé Hospitality Library and the Catherwood Library to form a single structure serving Cornell’s specialized business and labor Schools.  The consolidated structure serves 1805 undergraduates, 1314 graduate students, 143 resident faculty, and extensive distance education, executive education, and extension programs. The Management Library serves the MBAs, PhDs, faculty, and staff of the top-tier Johnson School, as well as Cornell’s broader community of business researchers.  As a member of the Management Library’s public services team, the successful candidate will provide research and teaching services focused on business information. The Coordinator will assist patrons with in-depth business research, as well as lead business research workshops and develop online materials in support of the library’s instruction program.   S/he will also provide library outreach services including developing relationships with faculty and students through school events and personal interactions.

Responsibilities: 

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Coordinator of Research Services is responsible for:
  • coordinating the provision of research services in the Catherwood, Management, and Nestlé Libraries;
  • providing direct research assistance focused on the Johnson School community;

  • developing and preparing content to support use of library resources;
  • designing, teaching  and evaluating instruction sessions, including working with faculty to develop curriculum-specific instruction programs as well as coordinating research support for large classroom assignments; 
  • participating in the on-going development and assessment of the Research and Learning Services department;
  • coordinating the provision of research services by librarians, staff, and students, in the Catherwood, Management, and Nestlé Libraries;

  • directly supervising three FTE Research and Learning Services team members;
  • maintaining activity in professional organizations, library and university committees, and scholarly pursuits.

Acquisitions & Financial Services Team Leader

JOB SUMMARY:

Emerging Technologies Librarian


The William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University seeks an energetic, user-oriented public services librarian to serve as Emerging Technologies Librarian.  This individual will provide leadership and expertise in designing, developing and supporting the library’s online presence.  The successful candidate must be an innovative and creative individual who enjoys exploring new technologies and has the ability to create and suggest useful applications in an information environment.  The librarian is primarily responsible for identifying, evaluating, implementing and teaching the use of new technologies to improve information access and student learning.  Additionally, this librarian works on the Information Desk, teaches library instruction classes, serves on the library Web Team, and serves as liaison to one or more university departments.  The Emerging Technologies Librarian reports to the Head of Reference and Instruction.

Acquisitions Librarian (Assistant Professor)


The Department of the Library, at the College of Staten Island, seeks applicants for appointment to a tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor - Acquisitions Librarian beginning October 2012. The Acquisitions Librarian will serve in a leadership role in collection development activities including assessment, selection, resource trials, and outreach to faculty; monitor long-term collection development commitments such as approval plans, serial subscriptions, patron-driven acquisitions, and electronic purchases vs. leasing programs. This individual will establish and maintain effective vendor relations and will serve as the liaison to the College's Purchasing and Accounts Payable departments. In addition, this position is responsible for working with the Office of Institutional Advancement to facilitate the receipt of gifts to the Library, including occasional off-campus review and collection of materials. The successful candidate is expected to provide reference and research assistance to library users and to pursue an active and productive academic agenda through scholarly publication, grant writing, and participation in professional conferences.

The ideal candidate will have a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline. A second graduate degree in addition to the MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school is required for a position as Assistant Professor. Preference will be given to candidates with basic knowledge and experience in the evaluation and acquisition of standard financial practices (e.g. budget reconciliation, fiscal year budgeting). Applicants should demonstrate: knowledge of trends and services in academic libraries with proficiency in the use of acquisition modules of library management systems (i.e. Aleph, OCLC); strong presentation, interpersonal, and negotiating skills; experience working in an academic library; and the ability to work individually and as a team member in a dynamic environment on a variety of projects simultaneously.

Special Collections Librarian


Reporting to the Head, Special Collections & University Archives Department, the Special Collections Librarian has curatorial responsibility for rare book and manuscript collections.

General responsibilities include:
  • Developing and managing collections, sensitively building upon existing strengths and exploring new areas for development, including books, manuscripts, media, and other formats.
  • Developing donor and dealer relationships, and cultivating campus and community partners.
  • Generating and coordinating applications for grant funding.
  • Setting priorities for collection processing and cataloging.
  • Collaborating with colleagues working in areas of collection development, archival and manuscript processing, rare books cataloging, preservation, and digitization.
  • Providing reference services, participating in instruction sessions and outreach activities, and supporting day-to-day operations.
  • Participating in Libraries’ initiatives outside of Special Collections & University Archives by serving on Libraries’ and campus committees and contributing to other relevant activities and events.
  • Maintaining a course of personal professional development through active participation in rare book, manuscript, and archives professional associations or other professional activities external to the Libraries.

Required Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to work creatively in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with emerging trends in rare book and manuscript librarianship.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively and sensitively with library and university colleagues, faculty, students, researchers, and donors.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in a Special Collections, archives, or museum environment
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge of the rare book and manuscript trade
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for describing and cataloging rare books and manuscripts, including the use of content management systems such as Archon.
  • Reading knowledge of one or more Western European languages other than English.

Salary and appointment: Appointment will be made at the Librarian level with a salary range of $43,000 to $46,000. Start date is negotiable.
