Information Literacy and Social Sciences Librarian, Assistant Professor in the University Libraries


Colgate University seeks an innovative, technologically adept and service-oriented librarian with a demonstrated passion for pedagogy to lead its information literacy program.  Reporting to the Chair, Reference & Instruction Department, the Information Literacy and Social Sciences Librarian will work collaboratively with a team of librarians to design, teach, promote and assess the libraries’ instruction efforts through partnerships with faculty, particularly but not only in the social sciences, and other campus stakeholders.  She or he will be conversant with issues of statistical, media, and geospatial fluency. 

The successful candidate will enjoy the opportunity to work in an expanded library and technology center with computer equipped classrooms, multi-media production suites, audio and video studios, and a new Digital Learning and Media Center.    The facility supports learning, teaching and scholarship through close collaboration between the Libraries  and the University’s Information Technology Services.

Posting Description:
The Auraria Library, serving the University of Colorado Denver, Downtown Denver Campus; Metropolitan State College of Denver; and the Community College of Denver, seeks a dynamic, energetic, and innovative individual to serve as the Head of Research and Instruction Services.

The Head of Research and Instruction Services is a dynamic and strategic manager of the daily operations and staff for collection development, research assistance, and instruction services for Auraria Library. This is a tenure-track faculty position that reports to the Associate Director for Education, Research, and Information Services. This position coordinates the work of the Library's Subject Teams which are charged with fulfilling the educational missions of the Auraria Library and the three institutions on the Auraria Campus-the University of Colorado Denver, the Metropolitan State College of Denver, and the Community College of Denver. This position is an active member of the Library's Professional Studies Subject Team, which is comprised of subject specialists with knowledge of disciplinary content areas, educational approaches and learning pedagogy, library research strategies, and/or collection development and evaluation. The Professional Studies Team disciplines include public affairs/administration, international or governmental studies/affairs, business, hospitality, health administration, sports & leisure, criminal justice, and law.

Position Classification and Salary:
This is a tenured/tenure-track faculty position with a minimum salary of $60,000 commensurate with skills, experience, and rank. The incumbent may be initially appointed as a non-tenure track, senior instructor and then moved into a tenure-track position effective July 1, 2012. To be appointed with tenure, one must be tenured at a comparable academic institution and meet the Auraria Library's criteria for tenure and promotion. Examples of Work Performed:
§  Supervises librarians and staff with primary responsibility for collection development, research, and instruction services within the Subject Team environment. Creates annual goals and participates in strategic planning for these areas with the ERI Services Leadership Team which reports to the Associate Director.
§  Working with Subject Teams, the Instruction Project Leader, and the Instructional Designer, creates curriculum integration strategies for development and delivery of high-quality, learner-centered instructional programs for faculty and students using appropriate technologies and evaluative measures.
§  As an active member of the Library Professional Studies Subject Team, cultivates and sustains collaborations with academic faculty to enhance teaching and learning success in the Professional Studies disciplines through curriculum integration of the Library strategic plan goals of informed learning and information literacy
§  Teaches Library instruction classes in one or more of the Professional Studies areas in both a f2f and online environment.
§  Designs, implements, and evaluates learning partnerships both programmatically and with individual academic faculty within the Professional Studies disciplines.
§  Conceptualizes, implements, delivers, and promotes research help services (virtual and f2f) across a large, complex, and rapidly changing information landscape. Furthers the integration of technology into the Library's research services program, including involvement in continuous quality improvements aimed at (re)designing services to most effectively meet the needs of Library users and thereby position the Library as a recognized contributor to student, faculty, and staff learning.
§  Adopts/adapts, develops, and promotes new and technologically innovative information tools, services, and digital learning materials to be used in or outside the classroom to meet the 'anytime, anyplace' information needs of the campus' tri-institutional constituencies.
§  Other duties as assigned including the possibility of working nights and weekends as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
§  Demonstrates initiative, creativity, and ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing, team-oriented environment.

§  Experience with emerging and established technologies in academic libraries, including web site design and web 2.0 tools.
§  Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with assessment tools and methods, including informed learning approaches and culturally diverse aspects, with applied expertise in co-designing information literacy learning outcomes for the disciplines with the academic teaching faculty.

Required Education/Experience/Skills (Minimum Qualifications)

§  Master's degree in library and information sciences
§  Terminal degree in one of the following areas: public affairs/administration, international or governmental studies/affairs, business, hospitality, health administration, sports & leisure, criminal justice, or law OR significant experience in one of the Professional Studies disciplines that includes at least one of the following: instruction, instructional design, collection development, and/or high level of research methodology competency.
§  Two years experience in an academic environment supervising librarians and/or faculty.
§  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including writing clear, concise documentation and effective public speaking.
§  Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment with a strong commitment to student learning.  

Desired qualifications

§  ALA accredited graduate degree in Library and Information Sciences or its foreign equivalent
§  Experience in applying instructional design/educational technology techniques and information literacy concepts in a higher education environment, including in academic libraries.
§  Experience in formal assessment of learning outcomes in a higher education environment, including academic libraries.
§  Experience in collection development in academic libraries.
§  Experience working successfully with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, including students, international scholars, faculty, staff, and administrators.

Director of Digital Initiatives


The J. Murrey Atkins Library at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking a Director of Digital Initiatives. Atkins Library’s Digital Initiatives Department is responsible for drawing the Library’s digital presence into ever greater alignment with the campus research and teaching needs, and with University IT strategic planning.

UNC Charlotte’s Atkins Library is a comprehensive research library with over 42,000 serial titles and an annual budget of over $10 million. The Director of Digital Initiatives is a new position, reporting to the University Librarian, and supervising a growing staff of at least seven. The Digital Initiatives unit is focused primarily (though not exclusively) on building innovative, library-oriented software, and integrating library content into complimentary learning systems. This position also works closely with the University’s colleges and its Information Technology Services unit to conceptualize and coordinate efforts to create systems that advance the academic mission of the University. The position also represents the Library to external constituencies in regard to information technology

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or Information Systems
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience
  • Experience with the management of units that invent, develop, and integrate digital library software or comparable higher education-based systems
  • A demonstrated record of managing innovative and effective learning and research technology services for a diverse community of learners and researchers
  • Strong communication skills including writing and presenting for a variety of audiences is essential
  • Competency in analysis, budgeting and planning, assessment and evaluation, and service management

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Aligning Digital Initiatives strategy, services and investment decisions with the research and education priorities of campus-wide departments, as well as the university IT strategic plan;
  • Overseeing budgeting, resource planning processes and staff development programs within the Digital Initiatives Department;
  • Supervising the development and integration of digital products and services in support of campus-wide teaching and research;
  • Representing the Library in regard to information technology issues, serving as liaison to librarians, teaching faculty, students, University colleagues, vendors, and partner institutions external to UNC Charlotte;
  • Identifying opportunities for external funding of Library technology initiatives, and managing projects so funded;
  • Participating on the campus-wide IT Management Team that sets organizational directions and priorities;
  • Serving as the Data Security Officer for the Library, establishing and monitoring appropriate data security plans.
  • Maintaining and sharing a broad awareness of emerging technologies and trends related to curriculum and research. Makes recommendations to the University Librarian as appropriate

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, TRAINING/EDUCATION:
  • Experience supervising applications development for academic institutions
  • Successful experience in acquiring and managing substantial grant-funded projects
  • Project management skills
  • Familiarity with research library systems and functions
  • Experience overseeing a broad portfolio of teaching and research support services that includes technology development, distance education support, learning management, high-performance and scientific computing and faculty development
