Associate Director, Library Applications and Knowledge Systems


Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs/Executive Director Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL), this newly created faculty position will provide leadership for the library’s applications, knowledge systems, and new and emerging technologies, integrating the resources, services and programs of the HS/HSL.  Working in a highly collaborative library and campus environment, the Associate Director for Library Applications and Knowledge Systems will manage 6.5 staff consisting of an internal library network administrator, web developers, support staff, and an instructional technology/design team.  This is a full-time, non-tenure track position at a rank of Librarian II or III.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 
·      Provide vision, oversight, and leadership for HS/HSL staff, public and classroom computing, the internal library network and computing infrastructure, web development, instructional/collaboration technology and facilities, and special knowledge-based projects.

·      Monitor and recommend new and emerging library applications and knowledge systems such as next generation library catalogs, aggregated discovery tools, research and collaboration systems, instructional technology, digital archives, and simulation and presentation labs and tools.

·      Consult with campus IT leadership on critical issues regarding the University of Maryland computing network and infrastructure to insure a cohesive, coherent, and unified approach.   

·      Collaborate with campus partners, diverse groups, teams, and committees to provide expertise ensure for informed decision-making regarding the technical infrastructure needed for HS/HSL to enable library-based campus projects such as the digital archive, knowledge informatics, data management metadata application and consultation, resource sharing, online teaching and learning, and discipline- and subject-based database development.

·      Plan and develop the knowledge infrastructure, tools, and digital resources that support the HS/HSL’s role in inter-professional education, collaboration, outreach, informatics, and translational science.

·      Support emerging partnerships with the clinical enterprise in the integration of knowledge and evidence-based resources into the electronic health record and into other clinical tools.

·      Represent the HS/HSL on campus, system, regional and national health and library information technology committees.

·      Lead and represent the HS/HSL in the adoption and technical integration of new University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions discovery tools and library management systems.

·      Supervise staff and set goals for the Computing and Technology Division of the HS/HSL, consistent with those in the University Strategic Plan and Campus IT Plan.

·      Balance technology needs with fiscal realities.

·      Identify library technology-oriented grant opportunities.

·      Participate in library or campus research using library application expertise.

·      Professional participation through presentations or publications regarding innovative library applications for practice, or programs in health sciences libraries.

·      Engage in strategic visioning and planning for new and emerging technologies in an academic health sciences library environment.

·      Participate as a key member of the library management team in determining overall strategic direction for the HS/HSL.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
·         ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library or information science

·      Experience in an academic setting

·      Minimum 3 years of experience managing staff or managing projects in library applications, knowledge management systems, or new/emerging technologies

Librarian - Tenure Track Fall Quarter 2013


Holman Library at Green River Community College is seeking an experienced instruction and reference librarian with a strong commitment to information literacy and to serving the information and research needs of a diverse student population. Executive Director

The Board of Trustees of the Oak Park Public Library (OPPL),  a recently designated  “five-star” library, seeks an experienced, collaborative, and innovative leader to serve as Executive Director.  The OPPL serves a diverse population of   52,104 with a main library and two branch facilities.

Head of Systems, University Libraries

Kent State University Libraries seeks an innovative Systems Librarian to lead its Systems Department. The Head of Systems will continue to advance a vision for technology operations in a changing environment, advancing library computing capabilities throughout the University, the OhioLINK consortium, and the profession. The Head will work with all library departments to ensure the effective deployment and use of technology, and cooperate with the University’s computer center on university-wide services and issues that affect the Libraries’ systems and services. The Head will foster professional development, collegial relationships, and continuing education among the department’s faculty and staff.

The department employs one systems librarian, six technical staff, and several student assistants. It manages the Innovative Interfaces (III) ILS, ILLiad, and ERes systems for nine campuses; manages 600 PCs in multiple locations; supports three electronic classrooms; provides support for digital initiatives; provides support for the Libraries’ public web presence; and develops and maintains a staff intranet that provides an extensive array of custom library applications developed in-house by the three full-time programmers on staff. A migration to the III Sierra platform is planned for Spring 2013.

This is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty position; the incumbent will be required to meet reappointment, promotion and tenure standards.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Systems and Technical Services, the Head of Systems will:

  • Coordinate configuration and use of the Libraries’ integrated library system,
  • Contribute to library-wide planning, development and assessment of automation services,
  • Help evaluate and select hardware and software systems for the library,
  • Support the Libraries’ web sites by coordinating the management of local servers and applications and coordinating interconnections with the University’s content management system, the Springshare LibGuides system, and the library intranet,
  • Develop annual objectives for the department and monitor progress towards meeting them,
  • Evaluate department faculty and staff,
  • Coordinate all automation inventory, budget, specifications, deployment, and maintenance for all library areas including the library classrooms, public spaces, and staff desktops,
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends and issues affecting library and university computing systems,
  • Engage with professional organizations that track developing issues affecting the technologies employed by academic libraries.

 Required Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree,

Digital Services Librarian (Full Time, Tenure Track, Fall 2013)

Under direction of the Library Division Chair, and in coordination with the other faculty librarians, the successful candidate will be responsible for the leadership, planning, and management of online library resources. The position may include hiring and supervising classified staff and students.  Assignments may include both day and evening courses at the Monterey campus or Marina Education Center, as well as on-line instruction. 

Example of Duties:                       

As a fulltime faculty member in the Library, the successful candidate will also:

  • Collaborate with librarians and other faculty to identify, evaluate and integrate online resources and multimedia application in support of campus teaching and learning.
  • Provide expertise in the maintenance of the library website
  • Provide instruction and training for faculty, staff and students in information technology, research skills and information competency.
  • Manage the acquisitions process by which licensed resources are ordered, received and processed.
  • Provide reference services.
  • Participate in curriculum development as assigned.
  • Participate in information competency and literacy instruction, including single class sessions, a series of multiple sessions for a particular class and semester-length course, both face-to-face and online.
  • Work with academic divisions to share information and keep collections current.
  • Work with regional libraries to share resources and information.
  • Carry out collegial responsibilities including but not limited to institutional committee assignments and participation in shared governance committees and campus committees.

  • Assess and learn new tools associated with online resources.
  • May train and supervise staff working with online resources.
  • Teach short-term and semester-length courses in both online and face-to-face instructional formats, as assigned.

Work Schedule / Supplemental Information:                       
Anticipated Starting Compensation: 

Starting at $50,921-69,050 annually, based on documented education and experience.  In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate can also earn a Doctoral stipend of $2,850 or a multiple Masters’ stipend of $2,021, if applicable. In addition, the District provides an excellent fringe benefits package, including paid medical and dental coverage for employees and dependents, and a vision plan, life insurance and long-term disability benefits for the employee only. Retirement is the State Teachers’ Retirement System.  Participation in tax-deferred plans is available. 

Assignment and Anticipated Start Date:

The assigned work year is 175.5 days per academic year.  The assignment will include a minimum of 35 scheduled student contact hours per week. The selected candidate will participate in campus-wide events beginning August 2013.

Coordinator of Technical Services

East Stroudsburg University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position with the University Library beginning August 2013. The University Library at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) supports the mission of the university by providing materials, services, equipment, spaces, and environments that support the curricula, assist students, faculty and staff with their study, research, and informational needs, and stimulate cultural development.  The Library is an active participant in ensuring that students graduating from ESU are information literate. The University Library also contributes to the strengthening of relationships between ESU and its region through library-based services and activities. Responsibilities: The Coordinator of Technical Services establishes goals and objectives, does short and long range planning, and administers the daily operations of the Technical Services area The coordinator is responsible for cataloging, systems, and acquisitions activities of the library and for the oversight of library employees engaged in those operations. Required Qualifications Masters of Library Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited program; professional library experience in the technical services area and demonstrated potential for scholarly achievement. Finalist must successfully complete an on-campus interview.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to perform original and copy cataloging of multiple formats preferably in an academic or research library; Strong working knowledge of and practical experience with current cataloging rules, standards, bibliographic tools and metadata schema; Familiarity with current and emerging trends, standards and technologies in cataloging; Experience using and managing integrated library systems including its various modules, e.g. acquisitions, and familiarity with bibliographic utilities; Strong technology background and web authoring skills; Second masters degree; Demonstrated ability to work within a consultative team environment where collaboration and cooperation are essential; Evidence of effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; Ability to work independently; Ability to supervise and train staff; Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.

Head of Innovative Media


The Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of Innovative Media.
Responsibilities: The Head of Innovative Media will collaborate with colleagues in the library and across campus to develop programs and services that focus on students and faculty creating and using media in course-related activities, including leading the Innovative Media program and service development, directing supervision of staff related to this program, and leading the implementation of new Innovative Media Studio, planned to open in 2015.  The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member of VCU.
Salary: Salary commensurate with experience, not less than $60,000 annually. This is a full-time, non-tenured faculty position.
