Scholarly Communications Librarian


IUPUI University Library has an opening for a full-time, tenure track Scholarly Communications Librarian, reporting to the Digital Scholarship Team Leader. POSITION DESCRIPTION
Working in a team-oriented environment, the Scholarly Communications Librarian will play an important role in an organization that is committed to re-conceiving the academic library as a key partner in new modes of scholarly communication. The Librarian will contribute to the evolution of scholarly publishing practices within the academy by leading digital publishing services at the Library; developing and providing education opportunities for IUPUI librarians, faculty, administration, staff, and students regarding the Library’s digital publishing services; and providing guidance and advocacy on copyright issues, fair use, privacy rights, and open access.   Additionally, the successful candidate will assume subject liaison responsibilities for the IUPUI School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Primary Duties
The Scholarly Communications Librarian will be responsible for:
  • Leading the Library’s e-journal publishing and/or institutional repository initiatives
  • Creating digital publishing and copyright information resources and workshops for librarians, faculty, staff, and students at IUPUI
  • Serving as an advocate for new forms and practices of scholarly communications on campus and in the broader academic community
  • Assessing faculty and student scholarly communication needs and making recommendations to the Library for providing support
  • Furthering the development of the Library's role in scholarly communications across IUPUI, in areas including, but not limited to: open access, authors' rights, and new forms of information dissemination

Secondary Duties

As a member of the Library’s Teaching, Learning, and Research unit, the liaison to the School of Public and Environmental Affairs will be responsible for:
  • Selecting print and electronic information resources that support the School’s teaching and scholarship
  • Providing information literacy and skills instruction
  • Providing research consultations upon request
  • Supporting transformation of scholarly output into sustainable communication models and formats
  • Participating in the provision of reference services

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Earned Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program
  • Experience with digital publishing tools such as: Dspace, OJS, Fedora, Islandora, ContentDM, Drupal, WordPress, bepress, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly communication issues within higher education
  • Demonstrated service commitment

  • Overseeing a digitization team of 4-6 part time staff
  • Working with a variety of digital management systems
  • Actively communicating with Library subject liaisons to academic departments about the Program of Digital Scholarship and its possible applications in the disciplines they cover
  • Developing publicity materials in collaboration with the Director of External Relations to inform target audiences and the public at large about the Program of Digital Scholarship
  • Organizing small programs or conferences for digital project stakeholders to explore possibilities for collaborative projects and strategies for statewide standards, resource sharing, and evaluation

Director Division of Special Collections

Digital Processing Coordinator Librarian


Reporting to the Head, Preservation & Conservation, the Digital Processing Coordinator Librarian manages centralized digitization and processing of collections. The Coordinator works closely with staff in Library Information Technology, Cataloging-Metadata, Digital Research & Publishing, other library departments and vendors on digitization projects in all formats, including books, photographs, manuscripts, 3D objects, and audio/visual media.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Manage the University of Iowa Libraries’ digital processing activities.
  • Design, implement, document and manage workflows for multiple concurrent digitization streams.
  • Negotiate priorities and coordinate with staff throughout the Libraries (Library IT, Digital Research & Publishing, and Cataloging-Metadata) and content providers for successful end-to-end digital collections building.
  • Develop and maintain specifications for digital image capture and post-processing, in line with best practices as well as project-specific requirements.
  • Train and supervise staff and students on all phases of digital imaging, from assessment and preparation of physical collection materials to image capture, file naming and foldering, and post-capture processing.
  • Work closely with other staff in Preservation & Conservation on issues related to conservation treatment before and after digitization, and on proper care and handling of collections during digitization.
  • Work with outside vendors (such as the University of Iowa’s Center for Media Production) to digitize audiovisual materials, including reel-to-reel, film, VHS, LP, cassette tapes, glass slides, and other media.
  • Prepare specifications for digital vended services, evaluate responses to proposals for such services, make recommendations for selecting vendors; and act on behalf of the library as the technical liaison to vendors providing digital products.
  • Represent and champion digital preservation interests across the library, the University, and to the community at large.
  • Monitor developments and emerging trends, and participate in industry-wide conversations about collections digitization and relevant standards and technologies.
  • Contribute expertise in the creation of technical and preservation metadata.
  • Seek opportunities for cooperation and partnerships across campus, statewide, nationally and internationally.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of digital imaging concepts (resolution, bit depth, etc.) and familiarity with standards and best practices in a variety of formats.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet production deadlines and goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a rapidly changing technological environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment where consultation, flexibility, collaboration and cooperation are essential.
  • Ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical staff, and ability to translate user needs into technical requirements.
  • Experience with text and image scanning, OCR, and image manipulation.
  • Familiarity with Dublin Core or other metadata standards.
  • Basic knowledge of copyright and fair use as it relates to digitization.

Executive Director – Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) Search Extended

Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) (http://railslibraries.info/) is one of two multi-type regional library systems in Illinois. RAILS was formed in 2011, through the merger of the Alliance, DuPage, Metropolitan, North Suburban, and Prairie Area library systems. Library systems are established by state law (75 ILCS 10/), the Illinois Library System Act).  Funding for Illinois Library Systems is provided through the Illinois State Library and the Secretary of State, with funds appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly. The RAILS service area covers northern and western Illinois. The system serves more than 1500 public, private, university, and school library members, representing more than 3700 library facilities in a 27,000 square mile area. Coordinator of Marketing and Outreach


Working closely with the Libraries’ leadership team, the Coordinator of Marketing and Outreach is responsible for planning, administering, implementing and assessing library programs and services related to marketing, public relations and outreach; oversees the coordination of internal and external communications and activities such as presentations, public events, brochures and displays that promote library services and resources; coordinates the collection of data used for assessment of library resources and services; and engages in library collection management responsibilities.
Specific Responsibilities 
  •  Develop a communication plan for the library that supports identified goals; consult with stakeholders to identify needs, objectives and design approache
  • Write library news items, including events, special hours, announcement of new collections, and events; publish news to website, and distribute to other media
  • Serve as liaison to the Marquette Office of Marketing and Communication, working to place library news in campus media; coordinate branding strategy and design standards
  • Assist in the planning and promotion of library events and speakers
  • Actively seek, coordinate and implement programming opportunities with other departments on campus and beyond, with the goal of increasing the library’s visibility and involvement in the life of the University
  • Coordinate the writing and production of a variety of printed publications for the libraries, including effective and informative information brochures and newsletters
  • Coordinate photography of major events, exhibits and staff events for use in internal and external promotional campaigns

Digital Initiatives Librarian


Georgia State University Library seeks an enthusiastic, collegial, self-starter to serve as the manager of the Digital Archive @ Georgia State University, the University’s institutional repository, which highlights the research and scholarly productivity of members of the University community. The University Library administers the archive to collect, organize, disseminate, and preserve the digital scholarly output of Georgia State University faculty, students and staff.  The repository is hosted on the Digital Commons platform and currently includes ETDs, conference materials and journals.

  • Identifying and recruiting new content, and editing existing content as needed
  • Developing, implementing and evaluating marketing and promotion efforts
  • Providing support for the library’s scholarly communication activities
  • Raising awareness of Open Access to the GSU community
  • Providing Library and University faculty with information, training and assistance in depositing materials into the Archive, including establishing and maintaining Selected Works author pages
  • Analyzing policies, procedures and workflows to insure consistency and accuracy of metadata
  • Supporting established institutional repository guidelines, including submission rules and the development of new communities and series
  • Creating new guidelines as necessary


This position reports to the Associate Dean for Collections.

Qualifications:
REQUIRED:
  •  ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with current trends and emerging issues regarding copyright, open access and scholarly communication as they relate to institutional repositories
  • Knowledge of current metadata schemas, standards, and digital content management systems
  • Coursework or experience resulting in knowledge of principles and practices governing institutional repositories
  • Academic library experience
  • Experience working directly with faculty at a research university
  • Ability to meet requirements for promotion
  • Ability to pass a background check


PREFERRED:
  • Experience working with Digital Common
  • Project management experience
  • Experience developing, implementing and evaluating marketing and promotion efforts


Salary and Rank
Minimum salary of $48,000 for 12 months.  Salary is commensurate with the candidate’s education and experience.  Appointment at a faculty rank, on a contract renewal basis.

Social Science Reference Services Librarian


This position provides information, reference and research assistance to the university community with concentration in the social sciences.  This position also is responsible for selecting and evaluating library collections in assigned subject areas, developing and delivering instructional programs and products, planning and implementing web and individual outreach services, participating in library planning and development, and contributing to the library profession.

REQUIREMENTS: ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree; excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work both independently and collaboratively across disciplines in a service oriented environment; analytical skills including independent problem solving, critical thinking and time management skills; knowledge of reference resources; experience in teaching, training, and/or presentation; experience providing excellent customer service; experience in using emerging technologies, specifically web development and multi-media application. Library Instructional Designer


The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Library Instructional Designer. This position is located within the Libraries’ Division of Research and Education.
