Collection Development Librarian


The Marriott Library at the University of Utah is in the process of completely rethinking the way in which it acquires and provides access to knowledge and information resources for the University community.  In an information environment characterized by deep instability, one in which the functions of publishers, vendors, authors, and libraries are in radical flux, such a rethink is not only essential, but unavoidable.

In this context, the Library is seeking an energetic, forward-thinking, and patron-focused Collection Development Librarian who can help us envision and implement new collections programs while continuing to provide our patrons with effortless access to needed resources.

Position summary:

Reporting to the Head of Collection Development, the Collection Development Librarian develops and uses knowledge of the University community and the publishing world to select, acquire and make accessible the journals, databases, books and other media needed by the community. Will help to define best professional practices, and models them while helping colleagues work effectively to shape and build the collection. The Collection Development Librarian will focus on new developments in information access while acting as primary contact for traditional collection activities, and will explore and help develop new models of collection building and information access. The Library recently replaced a traditional system of individual subject specialists with a structure of College and Interdisciplinary Teams, who collaborate in collection building and campus outreach across broad subject areas; the Collection Development Librarian will work closely with these teams to train their members in use of new selection tools, and to keep them abreast of policy and procedural changes and relevant developments in the world of scholarly communication.

Representative Duties:
·         Day-to-day integration of collection development activities with those of Acquisitions and the Director of Planning and Assessment.
·         Coordination with College and Interdisciplinary Teams
·         Oversee major journal packages
·         Database licensing
·         Monitor discoverability and access issues related to online resources.
·         Collection / use analysis
·         Collection oversight

Required qualifications
·         ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS, by January 2011

Salary
$45,000 minimum

Excellent benefits calculated at approximately 35% of salary including TIAA-CREF, medical, dental, generous paid sick and vacation accrual, sabbaticals, professional development time.  Marriott Library is an ARL library with holding of nearly 3 million volumes, 32,000 journals in electronic and print formats, and a considerable number of other networked electronic resources.  The University, with a student population of 29,000 is situated on a 1,500 acre campus in Salt Lake City.  The library has just completed a large-scale renovation which includes a state-of-the-art Knowledge Commons and a center to create multimedia digital content.  Teaching facilities, used by campus and library instructors, include 18 classrooms, labs and seminar rooms and a 250 seat auditorium.

 Library Specialist - DOUGHERTY STATION LIBRARY
The Dougherty Station Library is a joint-use public and community college library operated through a partnership between Contra Costa County, Diablo Valley College and the City of San Ramon.  The goals of the Library are to support information needs as determined by the goals and objectives of each institution; develop collections, provide convenient access to them, and assist and instruct in their use; extend accessibility to information resources through participation in area, state, and national library networks; offer programs of interest to the service population; and provide an environment conducive to leisure reading, study and research.  The Library Specialist – Dougherty Station Library will act as a specialist developing library services to support College students and faculty.
 LIBRARY SPECIALIST - LAFAYETTE LIBRARY AND LEARNING CENTER
The Lafayette Library and Learning Center opened in 2009 and is home to the Glenn Seaborg Learning Consortium, a first-ever collaboration among 12 high profile arts, education and cultural organizations that turns the Library into a regional resource of collaborative learning workshops, exhibits, lectures, films and discovery centers.  Consortium members include Chabot Space and Science Center, U.C. Lawrence Hall of Science, California Shakespeare Theater, and John Muir Health.  The successful candidate in this position will act as a specialist in support of the innovative partnership promoting the resources of Bay Area cultural, science and educational organizations as well as planning and managing dynamic collections and services for adults in the Lafayette community.

Digital Initiatives/Metadata Librarian

The Digital Initiatives/Metadata Librarian provides expertise and work in the creation and maintenance of digital content and metadata for the Library’s systems, including its online catalog and repository. This innovative, energetic individual will work collaboratively to develop, refine, and implement policies, procedures, workflows, metadata standards and crosswalks for digital collections; manage assigned digitization projects; and participate in the overall management of digital collections and production work. This position reports to the Associate University Librarian, and is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position with the rank of Assistant Professor in the Resource Services and Technology (RST) unit. The incumbent will be expected to work collaboratively to build partnerships within the Library and the campus; engage in scholarly activities; and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession.

Specific Responsibilities
·         Lead and/or participate in the planning and implementation of projects and initiatives related to digital collections, including the digitization of materials in a variety of formats.  Provide plans for digital projects, monitor the timely progress of ongoing projects, and create documentation for project-related activities.
·         Lead and/or participate in digital content creation, and in the evaluation and application of appropriate metadata schemas to provide description and access to various digital objects. This includes keeping up to date with national metadata standards and schemas, and being responsible for interpreting and adapting those for local purposes. 
·         Propose, plan, and lead the Library’s digital preservation program in collaboration with stakeholders, establishing policies and best practices for the long-term protection of and access to digital objects.
·         Act as liaison for digitization and metadata projects with other departments within the library and/or other campus groups. 
·         Assist with training and technical advice to library staff regarding digitization standards and metadata assignment. 
·         Evaluate, analyze, and implement systems-related aspects related to digitization, digital preservation, and metadata operations.
·         Participate in the collaborative development of metadata/cataloging tools, and discovery and presentation tools and applications.
·         Participate in digital library-related initiatives and projects with Oregon University System institutions, the Orbis Cascade Alliance, and other groups, as assigned. 
·         Provide occasional assistance to the Monographic Cataloging team and participate in its projects as appropriate, working closely with the Head of Monographic Cataloging.
·         Participate in marketing and outreach efforts by contributing content to the Library’s Web sites, blogs, and electronic publications.
·         Adhere to University and Library policies and procedures, including Portland State University’s Professional Standards of Conduct (http://www.pdx.edu/hr/professional-standards-conduct).
·         Participate in the establishment of short- and long-range goals, objectives, and priorities, aligned with those of the Library and the University.

Qualifications
Required
  • Master’s degree earned from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience supporting digital collections and/or metadata services in an academic library.
  • Demonstrated experience working with digital library content and metadata standards, including non-MARC schema such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS, EAD, TEI, VRA. 
  • Demonstrated technical experience with current digital collection technologies, standards, platforms, and products.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
·         Knowledge of the standards and technological framework for digital preservation. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging national cataloging standards, including MARC, controlled vocabularies, RDA, FRBR, etc. 
·         Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Commitment to professional development and service.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with DSpace or other content management software, and knowledge of Institutional Repositories management, including policy matters, intellectual property issues, and strategies for recruiting appropriate content.
·         Thorough knowledge of OCLC bibliographic utilities, and experience with cataloging in an Integrated Library System, preferably in the Innovative Interfaces, Inc.’s Millennium system. 
·         Original cataloging experience and reading knowledge of one or more non-English languages.

Electronic Resource Management Librarian


POSITION:
This position fills a key leadership role in the Collections/Contracts Department at the CSU Libraries by ensuring access to commercial and public information resources needed by the CSU community for teaching and research.

The CSU Libraries is a technologically sophisticated environment with a strong commitment to electronic resources and services.  The Libraries has recently reorganized and aligned with campus Academic Computing.   The Dean of Libraries is also the Vice President for Information Systems.  This position presents significant opportunities for a librarian who is innovative, technologically literate, and invested in the future.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Incumbent is responsible for procurement and licensing of primarily electronic information products purchased directly by the Libraries and licensed collectively by the Colorado Alliance, Greater Western Library Alliance, and other consortia.

There is also a small print serial component in the current workflow and the incumbent will be responsible for ongoing activity focused on identifying and transitioning print to electronic.

The individual selected for this position will be integral to the success of the strategic vision of a virtual library collection at CSU.

Supervises staff in the unit responsible for populating and maintaining the Innovative Electronic Resource Management module (ERM) and traditional serials processes including hiring, evaluating, training, reviewing and revising assignments, and  workflow procedures.

Assists in new and renewal negotiations with vendors and content providers and administers new and existing licenses for electronic products, interpreting data for maintaining a license database, and consulting with University Legal Counsel to resolve license and contract issues.

Applies knowledge of copyright and intellectual properties principles to ensure that rights of library users are protected.

Responsible for researching license agreements in order to place new subscription orders, developing and maintaining guidelines for standard licensing terms, monitoring subscriptions in relationship to existing license expirations and renewals, registration and activation of electronic subscriptions, and troubleshooting electronic information resource access problems reported by patrons and other library staff.

Plays a key role in the process of identifying and managing the next generation of discovery tools.

Effectively identifies and applies new technologies in support of efficient processing activities and develops expertise with emerging technologies.

Maintains awareness and engagement of trends and developments in e-resource acquisitions and management and transfers knowledge to staff across the organization.

Identifies and negotiates options for preservation/archiving of purchased electronic products (e.g., LOCKSS, CLOCKSS, PORTICO, local servers, etc.) and assures tracking through ERM.

Works with Libraries technology staff to test functionality of archiving systems.

Oversees the operation of the citation linker (currently SFX) and knowledge base(s) which contribute to the Libraries' discovery tools for users.

Oversees the linking of user terms and conditions to records in the online catalog and ensures that resources are properly managed through the proxy server for user authentication.

Establishes and monitors ongoing extraction of the citation linker knowledgebase to provide holdings data (e.g., Google).

Monitors trends/changes in library and publisher environments that affect citation linking performance and options for services and enhancements.

Works closely with subject liaisons and other staff to identify, select and acquire new information resources, assess needs of CSU community stakeholders, and adjust resources to fit programmatic and research needs in a patron-driven acquisitions environment.

Works closely with Metadata staff and Systems staff to make sure electronic content and database resources are properly added, and records created for access by users.

Works with other Collections staff and accounting staff to monitor budgets, ordering and receivables, and collaborates with staff at CSU Pueblo and CSU Global on acquisitions and licensing.

Collaborates with others in the implementation of best practices, ongoing pursuit of process, improvements, and development/dissemination of policies, guidelines, and procedures.

Maintains successful vendor/publisher relations and monitors and evaluates their services.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:  Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited degree program.  Minimum of two years professional experience working with electronic resources.  Evidence of flexibility, innovative thinking, and a vision for the future of academic libraries.  Knowledge of the electronic product market, publishing issues, pricing models, and other serials issues, including cataloging.  Experience with an integrated library system—preferably Innovative Interfaces, Inc.—including, acquisitions, accounting, serials and ERM systems.  Knowledge of library technical services processes.  Evidence of excellent computer skills, including knowledge of general computer logic and database structure, as well as electronic content delivery and delivery systems and digital preservation frameworks for commercial collections.  Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external parties and diverse constituencies, including other staff, cross-department/division teams, and patrons.  Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing environments and priorities.  Effective oral and written communication skills, and ability to communicate clearly with others.  Evidence of leadership potential and institution-wide perspective.  Ability to meet tenure and promotion criteria in an academic library.
Preferred:  Successful supervisory and management experience.  Demonstrated ability to anticipate user needs and seek ways of providing satisfactory solutions.  Demonstrated ability to work with detail to ensure accuracy.  Ability to analyze data.  Knowledge of industry standards related to serials and e resources, e.g., ISSN, Open URL, KBART, ERMI, SERU, COUNTER, SUSHI, MARC, etc.  Experience working with vendors and licensing issues.

RANK AND SALARY:
Faculty status and responsibilities. Twelve-month tenure-track appointment with contract reviewed annually until tenure is granted.  Rank is dependent upon qualifications. Insurance benefits are available.  Faculty may select from several options for medical, dental, life, and personal disability insurance, as well as retirement plans.  Full-time faculty earn 24 days of vacation and 15 days of sick leave annually.  Optional deferred compensation.  Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
