Reference Librarian for the Sciences and Engineering

The Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Reference Librarian for the Sciences and Engineering. VCU Libraries seeks an innovative, motivated individual to join the recently expanded Research and Instructional Services department. The incumbent will create programs and services for VCU’s science and engineering community that advance the research enterprise and foster a climate of scholarly inquiry and student achievement. He or she will collaborate with students and faculty to develop initiatives that align with trends in scientific research and scholarly communication. The Librarian will be instrumental in the establishment of a service profile for the new School of Engineering community located on the Monroe Park Campus Addition. Responsibilities
Reporting to the Assistant Head for Research Services, the Reference Librarian for the Sciences and Engineering will be designated the department’s liaison to VCU Life Sciences, the School of Engineering, and selected departments in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Librarian will teach curriculum-integrated instructional sessions at all degree levels, collaborate with teaching faculty to develop course content, and create Web-based and other online learning tools. The Librarian will be an active participant in the department’s consultation services, offering appointment-based, discipline-specific research assistance to individuals and small groups. He or she will develop the science and engineering reference collection in both print and digital formats. The incumbent will work collaboratively with all members of the department as well as colleagues at the Tompkins-McCaw Library to shape and promote overall library outreach, programs, and services. The Librarian will provide point-of-need research assistance at the reference desk, including some evenings and weekends. The Reference Librarian for the Sciences and Engineering is expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Faculty with the VCU Libraries are evaluated, and promoted, on the basis of job performance, scholarship, and professional development and service.

Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited graduate degree or an accredited graduate degree in another appropriate discipline. Preferred: Academic preparation in the sciences and/or engineering; a graduate degree in a discipline related to the assigned liaison responsibilities is highly preferred. Substantial public services experience in an academic research library and familiarity with research methods and tools in the sciences and engineering. Understanding of the research behaviors of scientists and engineers, and an awareness of trends in the dissemination of information in these disciplines. Knowledge of instructional design and e-learning trends. Experience with Web-authoring tools and standards. Initiative and creativity, willingness to cooperate and to share information, and the ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities under pressure. Excellent presentation and public speaking skills. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and a preference for group work. Strong service orientation. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience working in a culturally diverse environment highly preferred.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and not less than $42,000 minimum annually. This is a full-time, non-tenured faculty position. Discovery Metadata Librarian, Stanford University Libraries

This Position is double posted at the 3P1/3P2 levels. The position supports creation, organization, and maintenance of metadata to facilitate discovery and access to library information resources in various formats, using traditional cataloging standards as well as existing and emerging metadata schemas and techniques, and also includes reviewing print materials in Humanities subject area for discovery metadata creation. (The appointment will be made at the Assistant or Associate level, depending on qualifications and experience.)

RESPONSIBILITIES: Creates discovery metadata for Humanities materials applying the metadata schema appropriate to the material as defined by policy. Currently, predominate schema is AACR2 applied according to the BIBCO standards, but others such as Dublin Core applied as needed. Preservation Librarian, Stanford University Libraries

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Interim Head, Preservation, the Preservation Librarian participates actively in the preservation of Stanford University Library’s collections by providing a broad range of preventive preservation services to the libraries. The incumbent will:

• Develop a written preventive preservation plan for the Archive of Recorded Sound and implement top priority recommendations.
• Update the Collection Emergency Response Manual and, in partnership with the Interim Head, Preservation, design an emergency response plan for Stanford’s high-density preservation storage facility.
• In partnership with the Interim Head, plan and implement a library-wide staff and patron education program including the development of a written training plan and support materials.
• Analyze and interpret environmental data for collection storage areas and work closely with library units and facilities staff to insure the best possible storage conditions for physical collections in all formats.
• Oversee the library’s Integrated Pest Management program; evaluate data; recommend, initiate, and follow-up on remedial actions; collaborate closely with library units and facilities to insure a pest-free environment for collections.

Requirements: This fixed two-year term appointment is an entry-level position designed to give the incumbent a broad range of experiences in a large research library. The incumbent—supported by a well-established comprehensive preservation program—will be working in a fast-paced environment where preservation services are valued and supported.

We are seeking a colleague who is passionate about preservation of physical collections in all formats including books, manuscripts, photographic materials, audio recordings, moving image materials, and digital media. The incumbent will have a Master’s degree in Library Science. A demonstrated interest in preservation of library materials as indicated by a combination of relevant coursework and experience is required. Knowledge of preventive preservation principles and strategies is required. Knowledge of how these principles and strategies relate to media materials is desired. Associate Director of Community Services

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for the overall management and collection development of the Price Library of Judaica. Responsible for selection of library materials, reference service, research consultations, and bibliographic instruction in support of the Jewish Studies program. Promotes a public awareness of the Price Library of Judaica’s mission and resources and determines needs and priorities to enhance appropriate library support. Collaborates with librarians and the academic faculty to establish collection management policies. Participates in defining public service, technical service, and collection management goals, objectives, strategies, performance criteria, and materials budgets. Assigns, trains, monitors, and evaluates staff assigned to the Price Library of Judaica. Participates in the Library’s publications, fund raising, and bibliographical control programs. The library encourages staff participation in reaching management decisions and, consequently, the head of the Price Library of Judaica may be asked to serve on various departmental and library-wide committees and teams. The incumbent will pursue professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional association activities, to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
As the bibliographer for Jewish Studies, maintains and integrates the following responsibilities:
· Maintains contact with the faculty and students utilizing the Price Library of Judaica to ensure that the collections and services provided by the Library support needs. Informs this clientele of relevant library issues.
· Develops collection management policy and approval plans for the Price Library of Judaica. Stays informed of relevant Jewish Studies resources available in other libraries and collections.
· Reviews notification slips, trade and national bibliographies, advertisements, catalogues, and similar sources so as to initiate current and retrospective acquisition orders in all formats enhancing the Judaica collections in support of the academic program. Selects appropriate materials received by gift; reviews approval plan profiles and receipts for Judaica, and advises the Acquisitions and Licensing Dept. on sources of supply.
· Works with the library Gifts and Exchange programs to solicit and review gift collections and to establish exchange programs for Jewish Studies.
· Establishes cataloging and preservation priorities for Judaica materials. Makes storage, transfer, and deselection decisions for Judaica materials.
· Participates in the reformatting and digitization programs to ensure conversion of important items in jeopardy.
· Assists the Cataloging and Metadata Dept. in the copy cataloging of Hebraica and selection of materials for outsourcing of cataloging services.
· Provides consultative services to the faculty and advanced graduate students in Jewish Studies, usually by referral from public service areas or by specific arrangement with the academic program area faculty.
· Develops and maintains a professional relationship with other Judaica bibliographers, providing leadership at the national level in various organizations.
· Participates in the Special and Area Studies Collections departmental strategic planning process.
· Prepares collection assessment studies and defines resource needs.
· Participates in the Library’s development program.
· Participates in the Library’s exhibition program.
· Participates in the Library’s research and publication program.
· Serves on Library and departmental consultative bodies as appropriate.
· Pursues professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional association activities, to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
  • Thorough knowledge of one Jewish language and a working knowledge of one additional Jewish language
  • Strong familiarity with Jewish history and culture
  • An ALA accredited MLS degree (or foreign equivalency) or graduate degree in the bibliographic subject area or related field
  • A minimum of three (3) years experience in an academic or research library, with experience in managing and enhancing library collections, including those supporting Jewish Studies or other relevant and equivalent professional experience
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English
  • Familiarity with information and digital-based technologies and automated library systems
  • Strong potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion.

Preferred:

  • Earned graduate degree in a relevant subject field with a thorough knowledge of the research literature of Jewish Studies
  • A demonstrated record of bibliographic instruction, scholarship, public outreach, and development

Archivist Special Collections Library

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS LIBRARY
(Two Year Term Appointment)


Due to the recent acquisition of the archive of a noted film producer and director, Robert Altman, the Special Collections Library is seeking to hire an experienced processing archivist for this two-year term appointment (with possible renewal for a third year). The archivist would be responsible for arranging and describing over 900 linear feet of papers, legal and financial records, photographs, memorabilia, and artifacts related to the long and prolific career of the American film maker. Materials encompass projects from “MASH” (1970) through “A Prarie Home Companion” (2006).

The Special Collections Library is a unit of the University Library and includes the University’s primary collection of rare books as well as notable archives in the fields of radical social movements, transportation history, literature, the history of information transfer, and visionaries of theatre, film, and television.

DUTIES: The archivist will be responsible for processing and describing the Robert Altman Archive. Following national practices and standards as supported by the Society of American Archivists and local processing procedures and policies, the archivist will: appraise the collection; develop a workplan and arrangement schema; arrange the collection, while rehousing the material in archival-quality enclosures; compose a descriptive, EAD-compliant finding aid which will include a boxlist and detailed scope and content notes; mark up the finding aid using EAD; and create a MARC cataloging record according to guidelines outlined in DACS. The archivist will be required to handle sensitive materials and will be responsible for treating such material according to the terms laid out by the Altman family. Duties will also include supervising the work of student interns from the School of Information and student hourlies.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required: ALA-accredited Master’s degree with a concentration in archival studies. At least two years of experience processing and writing finding aids for archival collections, particularly collections over 20 linear feet. Ability to process quickly and accurately. Knowledge of EAD, MARC, DACS, and AACR2. Ability to work independently, as the work facility is off site. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Desired: undergraduate degree in Film Studies or a strong background or interest in the history of cinema. Experience processing collections over 100 linear feet. Knowledge of at least one European language, preferably French.

RANK, SALARY, & BENEFITS: Rank is anticipated at the Assistant Librarian level; final rank and salary dependent on qualifications and experience. Professional positions receive 24 days of vacation a year, 15 days of sick leave a year with provisions for extended benefits, a choice of medical plans, and opportunities for professional development and travel.

Systems Librarian

Position Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Director of the Art, Architecture, Science and Engineering Libraries, the successful candidate will assume these responsibilities.

Develop strong connections with faculty and students in the Chemistry Department and other assigned subject areas; seek opportunities for partnerships with faculty and librarian colleagues; evaluate, select, and review materials and information resources for inclusion in the collection; manage the collection budget in assigned areas; develop and maintain web pages for assigned user groups.

Provide reference and information services in-person and via electronic means; participate in the organization and planning of information services and the design and implementation of new services; plan, prepare, and deliver instruction to students, faculty, and staff at the University in one-on-one, small group, and large class environments; work with faculty to integrate instruction into classes; prepare reference and instructional materials in all formats.

Work closely with other library colleagues to evaluate current services, recommend, design and implement new services; coordinate and work with faculty, students, and other library staff to identify, assess, develop, and promote Science Library services using new and existing technologies; coordinate the promotion of Science Library services in print and electronic formats; provide leadership for and contribute to projects as assigned; participate as a member of appropriate University Library committees; participate in professional organizations that support these activities.

Qualifications
Required:
· ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.

Science Liaison Librarian

Collins Memorial Library seeks a knowledgeable, energetic, and user-oriented colleague to serve as the primary liaison between the library and science departments, including Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Geology, Physics, Math and Computer Science. Outreach Services Librarian

The University of California, Irvine Libraries seek a creative and energetic Outreach Services Librarian to play a leadership role in the development, planning, promotion, delivery, and evaluation of the Libraries’ outreach efforts. A major focus of the position is to manage the Libraries’ School Partnerships in Research and Information Technology (SPIRIT) Program. The Outreach Services Librarian works closely with the campus Center for Educational Partnerships to coordinate the Libraries’ participation in SPIRIT and a variety of other academic enrichment programs and serves as the contact person for area schools and other community groups seeking library orientations or instruction.
Reporting to the Head of the Education and Outreach Department, the Outreach Services Librarian works collaboratively with librarians and staff in the Education and Outreach Department and throughout the UCI Libraries.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Outreach Services Librarian is actively involved in programs designed to fulfill the University of California system-wide goal to facilitate the academic transition of students from middle school, high school and community college to the university. The SPIRIT Program is an outreach effort that brings middle and high school students to campus and takes UCI librarians into the community in order to help students develop academic research skills and expose them to a university environment. The program targets local schools especially those serving populations which are under-represented in the University of California. The Outreach Services Librarian works with teachers to integrate information literacy skills into the school curriculum. Three fundamental goals of the program are 1) to teach information literacy and life-long learning skills, increasing students’ confidence in their ability to locate and use information appropriately, 2) to facilitate access to, and use of scholarly electronic resources, 3) to prepare students to become eligible and competitive when applying for admission to the University of California, and to succeed academically as a university student. The Outreach Services Librarian provides administrative oversight of extramural funds obtained through grants and contracts in support of the SPIRIT Program and other outreach activities.
As an integral member of the Education and Outreach Department, the Outreach Services Librarian participates in a wide range of instructional activities directed toward non-traditional and underserved populations, K-12 schools, community college transfer students, and other community users of particular interest to the academic programs of UC Irvine. These activities include a summer science program for high-achieving high school students called COSMOS, Transfer Student Information Literacy Workshops, the Day at College Experience, and Teacher Information Literacy Institutes. The incumbent provides leadership to initiate partnerships with University of California, Irvine faculty who develop outreach programs involving undergraduates as well as middle and high school students. The Outreach Services Librarian also participates in other Education and Outreach Department initiatives including Welcome Week, Celebrate UCI, and the Libraries general education program which includes library instruction sessions for the lower division undergraduate courses, Writing 39C and Humanities Core. In addition, the Outreach Services Librarian participates in a variety of library committees, task forces, and teams. The position supervises student assistants.

The Education and Outreach Department

The Education and Outreach Department is responsible for leading an active, comprehensive instruction program which meets the needs of a growing campus and is responsive to the constantly changing environment of scholarly communication. The Department provides leadership for the Libraries’ ambitious outreach and instruction programs, emphasizing research skills, information literacy, information technologies, and life-long learning. The Department of Education and Outreach has a lead role in the coordination, integration, and assessment of all library instruction activities, including subject-based, graduate, and professional school instruction. The Department provides professional development opportunities designed to improve the teaching skills of library staff members. The Department is responsible for identifying and developing partnerships with all campus units and also provides leadership in the area of outreach to the K-14 community. The Department operates in a collaborative, team-based environment and works closely with members of the Libraries’ Reference and Collection Development Departments in order to fulfill its mission. There are 3 librarians (including the Department Head) and two library assistants in the department.


The Libraries
The UCI Libraries are committed to innovation and excellence and are in a major period of growth and change. The Libraries consist of the Langson Library, the Science Library, the Library Gateway Study Center, and the Grunigen Medical Library. The Langson Library primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Social Ecology, Business, the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Science Library primarily serves the College of Health Sciences (including the School of Medicine) and the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Information and Computer Sciences.
