Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and Education, the Head of User Services will collaborate to further articulate and implement the Libraries’ service philosophy with a heavy emphasis on user-centeredness. This reimagined position will be responsible for provision of high-quality, seamless services at physical library desks in UNLV’s Lied Library, including Circulation, Media, Computer Help, and Research and Information. The department has eight staff, three of whom are direct reports, and many student employees.


Responsibilities include: ensuring appropriate staffing for library service points, including oversight of training and scheduling; collaborating to establish and revise library public policies (e.g., circulation, building use, public access); continuous improvement of library desk services including transition of services to an unmediated and/or virtual environment; reviewing user feedback and resolving disputes; chairing the Libraries Service Providers Group, which includes representatives from all library functional areas including the branch libraries, with a focus on a consistently positive user experience; and conducting ongoing assessments related to User Services to assist in formulating policy and determining strategic directions.

Reference and Instruction Librarian

Xavier University of Louisiana, a historically Black and Catholic University, seeks an enthusiastic professional for the position of Reference and Instruction Librarian. This is a 12-month non-tenure-track faculty position. This individual will be responsible for providing reference services and innovative library instruction and information literacy programs in support of a Learning Commons next-generation environment. Head of User Services


Colgate University Libraries seeks an experienced, innovative, service-oriented librarian to be the Head of User Services. Head, New Media

This new position will manage a core of five staff to re-envision a library department (formerly Media and Computer Services) to focus on new media—on-demand access to services and content anytime, anywhere, on any digital device. Informing the work of the Libraries Systems and Web and Application Development Services Departments, the New Media Department will provide an interface between user needs and expectations and the Libraries’ physical technology and virtual presence.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and Education, the Head of New Media will collaborate across divisions to help implement the Libraries’ public technology vision through services, public spaces, and web presence. Responsibilities include providing leadership on website usability and content; keeping current with best practices for implementing new technology in support of digital and media literacy; developing and coordinating workshops and programs to educate Libraries staff and users about technology within the public computing environment; investigating methodologies and best practices for creating, promoting, and disseminating student-authored content; and conducting ongoing assessments related to New Media’s programming to assist in formulating policy and determining strategic directions. The Head of New Media will work with others to explore and evaluate technology solutions to meet user and organizational needs and experiment with and develop technologies and their applications for library services. The Head of New Media will also work with Collection Management staff to identify optimal ways for discovery, access, and use of media collections and will serve as the Libraries’ liaison to campus entities, such as the Disability Resource Center, the Office of Information Technology (WebCampus and Instructional Technology Services units) and Online Education. Online and Distance Learning Librarian

An energetic and service oriented librarian is needed to provide library services for the School of Continuing & Professional Studies (SCPS), and to be the library’s point person for other online and distance education programs as they emerge at the University of Virginia.

SCPS offers courses to nontraditional adult learners across the Commonwealth of Virginia through centers in Abingdon, Charlottesville, Northern Virginia, Newport News, Richmond, and Roanoke. Students enrolled through SCPS have the option to learn in the classroom, online, and through other modes of delivery. The librarian will provide in-person support for SCPS’s teaching and learning activities (with some travel around Virginia required) as well as teach online workshops/classes and provide remote reference for SCPS students.

In addition, the librarian will actively engage with other online and distance education initiatives at UVA, helping to plan library services, coordinate policies, and provide support for subject librarians in other areas. An enthusiasm for experimentation with emerging technologies and the ability to work with the disparate Schools and Departments across the Grounds will be very important.

Some weekend and evening hours will be required. The librarian may also engage in general reference desk duty, collection development, and special projects.

Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science or post-graduate degree in a related discipline
  • At least 2 years of experience in reference and/or instruction in a research library

Catalog Librarian, Assistant Professor

JOB DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Director of Technical Services, performs original and complex adaptive cataloging of print and non-print materials, including electronic resources, according to national standards. Develops comprehensive bibliographic descriptions, assigns subject headings and classification numbers according to Library of Congress practice, supervises maintenance of holdings input into OCLC and Voyager. May assist in the creation of digital collections, including supplying metadata. The incumbent will also participate in achieving departmental and library goals and participate in library committees.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Performs original and adaptive cataloging in all formats, including serials, utilizing OCLC and Voyager. Participates in retrospective conversion projects. Resolves database maintenance problems and provides training, direction and support to paraprofessional staff in performing cataloging and maintenance routines. Maintains knowledge of current cataloging practices and automated bibliographic access. Participates in developing, teaching, and implementing cataloging policies and procedures.


All LIS faculty and staff are responsible for working collaboratively to achieve University and LIS goals and objectives.


TERM OF CONTRACT: Assistant Professor, fiscal year appointment, academic year tenure-track, continuing contract.


SALARY RANGE: Negotiable dependent upon credentials and experience, with a minimum salary of $42,000. Excellent fringe benefits.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: M.L.S. from an A.L.A accredited library school; demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially in a production-oriented environment; cataloging experience (pre M.L.S. experience will be considered); experience with an automated integrated library system; and excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as a strong service orientation. Demonstrated ability to meet LIS and University standards in librarianship, research and professional service in fulfillment of tenure requirements.


QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED: working knowledge of MARC Format for Holdings Data; experience with OCLC and Voyager; electronic resources, serials cataloging; the ability to read music and foreign languages; experience with Microsoft Access.

Electronic Resources Librarian

Head, Hardin Library Services

Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Head, Hardin Library Services, provides leadership and coordination of operational aspects of the Library’s day-to-day activities. Oversees and coordinates the operations and staffing of Hardin Library’s three service desks. Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provides oversight of the activities at Hardin Library’s three service points, including the Basic Skills Simulation Center, the Interlibrary Loan Department and basic stacks management
  • Directly supervises 4 FTE Merit staff members (Access Services Supervisor, Reference Assistant, Interlibrary Loan Supervisor, and Collections Manager)
  • Represents the Hardin Library within the University community and beyond regarding daily operations of the library
  • Works with unit supervisors to establish policies, procedures, priorities and goals for Access Services, Collection Management/Stacks Maintenance, Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery, and Reference
  • Troubleshoots any problems including user verification, vendors, etc. and works with University Libraries’ personnel as needed to resolve the problem
  • Participates in Hardin Library activities and meetings
  • Monitors and stays abreast of trends and practices in health sciences libraries, particularly in the areas of Circulation, Reserves, Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery, Collection Management/Stacks Maintenance, and Reference
  • Evaluates aspects of Hardin Library services and identifies areas for improvement
  • Provides research consultations for faculty, staff and students
  • Serves as liaison to assigned colleges or disciplines
  • Serves on committees at the five University of Iowa health colleges and affiliated hospital as requested

Required Qualifications:


Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library science program

Kemp Library, East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania is seeking a librarian for the position of Coordinator of Technical Services to coordinate the cataloging, the systems, and the technical services aspects of library acquisitions. This is a full time, continuing tenure track faculty position beginning in January 2014 and reports directly to the Library Dean. GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

As leader of the Reference Team, the Coordinator of Library Reference and Instruction coordinates the delivery of library reference and instructional services, ensuring that the Alden Library is a responsive and vital academic resource for QCC’s students, faculty, and staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides leadership in initiating, promoting and providing a full range of quality individual library reference services and group information literacy sessions.
  2. Establishes an excellent working relationship with QCC full and part time faculty in order to enable and facilitate their access to materials and services which support their instructional needs.
  3. Provides professional development workshops for faculty in the use of the library’s services and resources.
  4. With other members of the Reference Team, provides library instruction sessions, introducing Alden Library collections and services in person and to remote users
  5. Prepares course-specific materials to support students’ research needs.
  6. Remains current with changing information delivery systems and new technologies.
  7. Serves as a team member in the collection development process which includes selecting new materials and weeding outdated resources. The Reference Librarian has primary responsibility for coordinating the selection of reference materials.
  8. Contributes to the development of Alden Library services by serving on related on-campus advisory and planning committees and attending meetings of off-campus networks and consortia.
  9. Cooperates with all library staff to ensure that the library is open and services are available during all advertised hours.
  10. Coordinates reference desk and library instruction schedules, ensuring excellent communication among library staff concerning the delivery of these services.
  11.  Prepares, collects, maintains and manages records regarding the use of reference and instructional services (including, for example, database use statistics and user satisfaction surveys) in order to assess and strengthen services.
  12. Actively supports the teaching and learning process; practicing honesty and integrity in and out of the classroom; strives to create and support a student-centered environment while fostering academic innovation and excellence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  2. Three years of progressively responsible library experience in a modern automated college library.
  3. Extensive experience in teaching library orientation and information literacy sessions to individuals and groups.
  4. Extensive experience providing reference service using print and electronic resources.
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  6. Excellent Customer Service skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Experience working in a Community College library.
  2. Experience creating Libguides or other multimedia reference resources.
  3. Experience with chat reference and social media in library work.
  4. Experience providing reference and instruction for distance education.

SALARY:

Salary is commensurate with MCCC salary schedule and dependent upon such factors as education and experience. Minimum starting salary is $55,391 per year. Anticipated starting annual salary range of $55,391 to $65,000 and includes a comprehensive benefits package. Work schedule includes requirement of one evening per week.

Manager, Learning Engagement


The Drexel University Libraries seeks an energetic and innovative manager with relevant education and experience to successfully lead librarians and work with faculty to embed coursework with information literacy, research skills and related lifelong learning skills. This individual will also have experience in assessment of instruction, at course and curricular levels, and reference services. To advance the Drexel mission of preparing graduates well for the workforce through its traditions of experiential learning, the Libraries will provide the incumbent with challenging opportunities for developing and applying leadership, creativity, and knowledge of diverse learners, online and on-site pedagogies, scholarly information, and program management.

The Manager, Learning Engagement provides managerial leadership for the Drexel University Libraries' partnership programs of Instruction and Reference which actively engage with the educational life of the university. These programs support the University's mission of developing students who are self-directed, life-long learners through traditional and innovative partnerships with faculty and other academic staff. The Libraries' impact on student learning is framed by the Drexel Student Learning Priorities (DSLP) core competencies for Drexel graduates that include information literacy. Specifically, the Learning Engagement programs aim to enable learners to explore and develop superior levels of DSLP competencies to identify, evaluate and use authoritative information resources, and to facilitate faculty teaching.


The Manager is responsible for working collaboratively with librarians, other Libraries' staff, and campus educators to design, implement, assess, and continually improve integration of information-driven learning skills in the Drexel student experience. Reporting to the Director of Academic Partnerships, the Manager supervises seven librarians at the University City campus and leads all librarians involved in the Libraries Instruction and Reference programs within a matrix management organization. As a member of the Libraries' Managerial Leadership Group, this Manager contributes to the ongoing operations of the Libraries through participation in strategic planning and divisional decision-making, and in implementation of library policies. Accountability is regularly reported through program goal setting, fiscal and performance evaluation, and client-based satisfaction and outcomes assessment. Librarians are expected to be professionally active through participation in campus activities, external service, and/or publication and presentation.

As leader of the Teaching, Learning and Research Group, the Director provides vision, leadership, planning, and management to advance all aspects of research services - including information literacy and faculty liaison programs, collection development, learning environments, outreach and assessment, and digital scholarship - through strategic planning, user-centered services, best practices, and robust technologies. Qualifications: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or a foreign equivalent; advanced degree or graduate work in a subject discipline strongly desired; 5 years of progressively responsible experience in planning, implementing, and managing reference/research services; teaching experience, information literacy and collection development; substantial supervisory and leadership experience; experience in successfully leading and implementing change; strong understanding of current issues, trends, and technologies; solid subject knowledge in a liberal arts discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to speak eloquently, write fluently, and command the attention and respect of students and faculty. A capacity for strategic thinking at both a systems level and a group level is vital. The Director must possess the ability to apply critical, analytical and innovative thinking and to successfully manage projects.
