Reference and Instruction Librarian – Contractually-Limited Appointment

York University Libraries seek a motivated, self-directed and public service-oriented Librarian in the social sciences and humanities based in the Reference Department of the Scott Library.

Along with building collections and offering reference assistance, the Scott Library Reference Department has an active and growing information literacy program, which aims to enable students, faculty, and others to understand the social context of information, to develop information-seeking behaviours that transcend specific finding tools, and to think critically about information. The Scott Library Reference Department also plays a leading role in the Learning Commons which collaborates with other campus partners in providing support for students in the development of academic literacies such as research, writing and learning skills.

The successful candidate will be responsible for faculty liaison, collection development and the delivery of information literacy instruction for assigned disciplines, and will participate in research consultations and outreach activities to academic departments and research centres. Responsibilities include selection of information resources, collection development and evaluation in selected disciplines. He/she will work individually and as part of a team to develop and provide reference services and information literacy programs to York’s community of users. She/he will help advance strategic priorities of the Department, York University Libraries, and the University. In this contractually-limited appointment he/she will also be expected to participate in project and committee work within the Department, Libraries and beyond, and to contribute to librarianship by carrying out professional research and/or scholarly work. Some evening and weekend work is required.

Qualifications:

  • An ALA-accredited MLIS or equivalent.

This is a two year, contractually-limited appointment with the designation of Adjunct Librarian and is appropriate for a librarian with up to three years post-MLIS experience. Executive Director - Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS)

The Challenge – to lead a vibrant, connected, accessible network of libraries to improve public education and the quality of life for Illinois citizens (paraphrased from RAILS Vision Statement). The Board of Directors of the newly formed Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) seeks an innovative and creative leader—capable of achieving organizational consensus amid the diverse demands and expectations of staff, member libraries, public officials and citizens. The successful candidate will be able to envision enhanced library services, inspire others to initiate innovative change that supports the cooperative spirit of Illinois libraries, lead a team of highly-talented professionals and relentlessly pursue the vision, mission and values of the System.

Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) is one of two multi-type regional library systems in Illinois. RAILS was formed in 2011, through the merger of the Alliance, DuPage, Metropolitan, North Suburban, and Prairie Area library systems. Library systems are established by state law (75 ILCS 10/), the Illinois Library System Act). Funding for Illinois Library Systems is provided through the Illinois State Library and the Secretary of State, with funds appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly. The RAILS service area covers northern and western Illinois. The system serves more than 1500 public, private, university, and school library members, representing more than 3700 library facilities in a 27,000 square mile area. Although the city of Chicago is within RAILS' boundaries, and a number of RAILS member libraries are located in Chicago, the Chicago Public Library constitutes a separate library system. RAILS provides delivery service to support Illinois’ vast interlibrary loan program, technology support for more than 800 libraries’ electronic catalogs, and Talking Book Services that serve persons with visual or physical disabilities who cannot read conventional print material. Responsibilities. The Executive Director is responsible for providing executive leadership in the overall administration and integration of a multi-type library system that has been formed from five previously existing systems. The Executive Director will work closely with the System Board of Directors, System staff, member library directors and representatives, as well as Illinois Heartland Library System and Chicago directors and the Illinois State Library. Qualifications.
MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school; and a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible library management, with five years at the senior and/or executive level including supervision of professional and supervisory staff. Desired knowledge, skills and abilities include: knowledge of principles and practices of library system administration; experience in long range planning and budgeting; strong verbal, written communication and listening skills; effective problem solving; organizational skills, including the ability to delegate authority, supervise and lead staff effectively at multiple remote sites; and proven experience operating within and influencing outcomes in a political environment. Compensation.

Marquette University Raynor Memorial Libraries Residency Program

The Marquette University Raynor Memorial Libraries Residency Program is seeking applications from early career library and information science professionals with a strong commitment to beginning a career in academic librarianship. The two-year Residency Program is designed to encourage and promote the professional growth and development of new librarians, providing a broad-based awareness of principles and practices in academic librarianship and an opportunity to develop an area of specialization.  The Residency Program hopes, in part, to help increase the presence of underrepresented groups in academic libraries.  Diversity is a core value and is central to the mission of Marquette University, and all interested and qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. 

Reporting to the Head of Research and Instructional Services, the Resident will participate in the Libraries’ information literacy instruction program for precollege, undergraduate, and graduate students; provide general reference services; contribute to collection development activities; become familiar with other units and functions of the Libraries; and assist in collaborative planning, analysis, and assessment of programs and services.  In year two of the program, the Resident will engage in an in-depth, concentrated experience in an area of specialization and will develop and complete an applied research capstone project that could be presented at a professional conference.  The Residency Program features a formal mentoring component with the Head of Research and Instructional Services, the Associate Dean of Libraries and other professional staff, who will help to acclimate the Resident to the Libraries’ environment, the University, and the Greater Milwaukee community, while providing general guidance and support.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Librarian


Washington University Libraries seek a service-oriented and innovative librarian to serve in this position to develop, expand, and support the campus GIS user community by assisting students and faculty in the selection and use of appropriate GIS technologies; coordinating GIS data access and acquisition; and providing instructional support in GIS.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The GIS librarian assumes responsibility for all aspects of the library’s GIS program, including instruction and outreach, data access and acquisition, provision of software/hardware, and future planning for GIS services. To fulfill these goals the GIS librarian will collaborate with subject librarians in outreach efforts to identify and support GIS opportunities in their disciplines; will work closely with the Digital Data Outreach librarian and Digital Repository librarian on data access and acquisition needs; and will assist faculty and students with specific GIS projects in support of their research, teaching, and learning endeavors. The GIS librarian will also work with University’s GIS Coordinator on campus-wide GIS projects and support.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: MLS or degree in a relevant subject area with concentration in GIS or significant experience relevant to the position.   Preferred: Second master’s degree; demonstrated experience using and applying GIS in a library environment; familiarity with ArcGIS 10 or 10.1 GIS desktop; experience building GIS web services, ArcGIS server 10, the ESRI Geoportal, and with creating and maintaining appropriate geospatial metadata.

Library Director - Daviess County (KY) Public Library

The Board of Trustees of the Daviess County Public Library (headquartered in Owensboro, KY) seeks an experienced library administrator, skilled in budgeting and financial management, with keen listening skills and the ability to respond to staff and community needs. The County Library is a vital part of why Owensboro was ranked the “#1 Place in Kentucky [for Raising Your Kids]” by Business Week in 2010. Responsibilities. As the chief executive officer of the Library (an independent taxing district), the Director plans, organizes, directs, evaluates, and reviews the library’s resources, personnel, facilities, services and programs to respond to the needs of the community.  The Director operates under the executive direction of the 5-member Library Board of Trustees.  Work includes developing and monitoring budget resources, planning and implementing overall library goals and objectives, and oversight of staff and services necessary to provide optimal service to Daviess County residents. Qualifications. A Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited graduate library school; eligibility for Professional Level I Certificate meeting KY certification; and a minimum of five years of successful public library experience which includes at least two years of upper administrative experience  and staff supervision. Catalog Librarian

With a $7 million operating budget, 160 employees, facilities in Bloomington and Ellettsville, and a strong outreach program, the Library provides the full range of library services, plus an award-winning literacy program and a five-channel community television network.

The Associate Director is responsible for the Library’s public service strategy and serves as a member of the administrative team; provides leadership and support for the managers of Adult and Teen Services, Children’s Services, Circulation, Collection Services, Community Outreach, Ellettsville Branch, Facilities, and Information Services; evaluates library and customer feedback to support collaborative, data-based decision making; coordinates committees and teams in process improvements; and represents the Library in the community.

The position requires an ALA MLS and seven years of progressively increasing responsibility. Salary $62,400 and up. To be included in initial review of applications, submit your credentials by 5 p.m., April 4, 2012.
