The University of Iowa Libraries seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented subject librarian for the Head, Lichtenberger Engineering Library. Working with a team of science, technology and medicine librarians around the campus, this individual is responsible for collection development, research and instruction, and other liaison services to the College of Engineering and the Computer Science Department. Within this context, the Head participates in long-term planning, conducts on-going assessment of collections and services, develops web-based guides and other research and learning products, collaborates on special projects, and serves on committees and task forces as needed. The Lichtenberger Engineering Library, located in the College of Engineering within the Seamans Center for Engineering Arts & Sciences on The University of Iowa Campus, is an innovative space dedicated to providing quality services to students, faculty and staff.

Position Description: Reporting to the Associate University Librarian and Director, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences and Branch Libraries, the incumbent is responsible for:
  •  Providing liaison services for the College of Engineering including reference, research, instruction, scholarly communications and related responsibilities for the disciplines of civil and environmental engineering, mechanical and industrial engineering, electrical and computer engineering, hydraulic engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, and computer science.
  •  Assisting students in the use and critical evaluation of information resources and necessary information management skills.
  •  Participating in the delivery of group instruction in support of the libraries’ outreach endeavors in the university community.
  •  Collection development, management, and maintenance of engineering and applied computing publications in all formats.
  •  Directly supervising 1 FTE support staff member, requiring competent and effective hiring, training, communication, coaching, performance management, conflict management, and recognition skills.
  •  Working with other campus librarians to develop and execute library-wide strategic initiatives and recommend services and activities to the Libraries’ Administration and other appropriate groups and individuals.
  •  Interacting with appropriate Main Library personnel, Physical Plant Maintenance staff, and Engineering staff to maintain facilities and equipment for the use, preservation, and conservation of materials in the Lichtenberger Engineering Library.

Lichtenberger Engineering Library: The Lichtenberger Engineering Library primarily supports the combined information and research needs of the College of Engineering and the computer sciences department through consultation, reference, instruction and collection development. Located in the College of Engineering, the Library has seating for 82, a collections budget of over $700,000 and 33 workstations available.

Reporting to the Director of Humanities and Social Sciences Services, this position will serve two key roles within the library. First, it will fill the need for a subject specialist for Romance languages, particularly for Spanish, Italian & Portuguese. The librarian will be charged with developing library collections in these areas, providing specialized library services, and serving the needs of the university's highly ranked academic department. The librarian will also share duties for French, particularly in the areas of library instruction, outreach and research assistance. Secondly, this position will help redefine the subject librarian role within Humanities and Social Sciences Services by assisting the department with a reconsideration of subject librarian services and the modeling of new roles for liaison librarians, including engagement with developments in digital scholarship and scholarly communication. Qualifications:

The Eastern Washington University Libraries is offering an 11 month full-time, tenure track faculty position as a Metadata Librarian at the Librarian II or III level depending on qualifications and level of experience. This position will begin September 1, 2011.

The position has professional responsibilities in librarianship, scholarship, and service. Responsibilities in librarianship focus on developing and maintaining the discovery engine used to find library resources; activities in cataloging, classification, and metadata creation for library resources; participating in production of archival digital collections and microfilm preservation; guiding the selection and use of metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, and data dictionaries to facilitate use of digital collections and institutional repository as these develop; communicating and consulting with others about the organization, description, and discovery of library resources; and coordinating physical processing of tangible resources.

Workload includes: 80% responsibilities in librarianship, including metadata, cataloging, and bibliographic control and coordination of staff and processing operations; 20% service and professional development including research and publication.

Responsibilities in librarianship include, but may not be limited to, the following:
• Leads in developing discovery tools for library resources; partners with others to build digital archival collections and repository.
• Consults and communicates with varied constituencies in the library and the university, about the organization, description, and discovery of library and information resources.
• Performs and oversees cataloging, metadata, and classification activities, including coordinating with library systems staff on aspects of library systems and software, procedure development for copy cataloging and other work by support staff, and policy development.
• Responsible for identifying, batchloading, and integrating records from multiple sources, in MARC and non-MARC metadata schema.
• Oversees vendor-provided database updating (currently from BackStage Library Works).
• Updates and maintains the library’s discovery engine (currently WorldCat Local).
• Coordinates any shared or distributed cataloging and metadata activities with other Orbis Cascade Alliance libraries.
• Coordinates physical processing of tangible resources, including labeling, repair, etc.
• Leads digital asset management at JFK Library, and identifies opportunities for collaboration in digitization initiatives. Coordinates current digitization projects and plans for future ones.
• Shares production responsibilities for digital collection and digital or microfilm preservation activities (e.g. digitized Special Collections, repository of EWU theses; microfilming local newspapers).
• Guides and collaborates on the selection and use of metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, data dictionaries, etc., to provide access to digital collections and to a centralized or distributed institutional repository as these develop.
• First-line supervision of staff working on cataloging, metadata, and digital collection production.
• Participates in library committees and working groups. Collaborates with colleagues and clients across the university and the library’s regional consortium.

Qualifications (Required):

Brief Description
The recent $80 million renovation of the Marriott Library sparked transformation of our building and our services to create inspirational space, build communities of learning, and connect people with knowledge. We invite innovative, collaborative, user-focused applicants who want to join our exciting library, one that is striving to set the standard for what it means to be a vibrant 21st century academic library. Reporting to the Head of Research and Information Services, responsibilities include: providing research and technology assistance in an integrated services center called the Knowledge Commons as well as through individual and small group consultations and online user support; helping to shape new directions for services that support student learning and faculty research and scholarship; teaching that includes first- year programs and other targeted courses in the campus curriculum; outreach and campus engagement that expands connections and builds partnerships; creation of online tools and user guides; liaison assignment(s) to campus departments and programs (depending on experience and expertise) that encompasses collection development, teaching, outreach, and customized services; and working in a team environment with a focus on continuously enhancing the user experience. The University of Virginia Library seeks a Curator/Americana Specialist for the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library. The Library stands at an exciting moment in its history, with an experienced staff, and extraordinary collections. We seek an outstanding colleague to help take this treasured resource to new levels.

Under the general guidance and supervision of the Director of the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library, the Curator will provide leadership for and general oversight to overall collection development activities, playing a principal role in identification and selection in the field of Americana.

The Curator will give primary attention to collection development activities, building on existing collection strengths, with an eye to new and innovative possibilities, engaging with faculty in matters related to collection development priorities and initiatives, and managing and promoting relationships with donors and with members of the book and manuscript trade, to further the development of the collections. The Curator also will work with the Harrison Institute for American History, Literature, and Culture, to develop public programs based on the Library's collections, and will: play a key role in defining the direction of the Small Library's digital library collections; collaborate with the Head of Outreach and Instruction to support instructional use of the collections; contribute to the Library's regular schedule of exhibitions; provide specialized instruction, reference and research services; and contribute to planning and administering grant-funded projects to support the Library's priority operations and services.  He/she may also supervise and train staff at all levels, including Library faculty and staff, as well as student assistants, interns, and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., MLS, Archives Administration, or a core field of American studies, history or literature preferred.)
  • Interdisciplinary perspective and commitment to ongoing scholarly growth.
  • At least 3 years relevant work experience in a library special collections or archival repository.
  • Demonstrated experience in collection development for rare books, manuscripts, or archival collections.
  • Experience with the antiquarian book and manuscript trade.
  • Demonstrated awareness of new modes of scholarship and instruction employing materials typically held in special collections and archives.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong service and collegial, team-focused orientation, and ability to work with a wide range of individuals, including university faculty, students & staff, visiting scholars, and donors.
  • Excellent organizational skills, to oversee a program of acquisitions and donor relations, and to manage programs and bring projects to completion.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development, and potential to meet the library's promotion requirements.

Salary and Benefits:
Competitive depending on qualifications. This position has general faculty status with excellent benefits, including 22 days of vacation and TIAA/CREF and other retirement plans.
