University Librarian

Reader Services Librarian

Access Services is a large-scale department that includes over 50 staff and is comprised of three main units: Reader Services, Resource Sharing, and Collection Management. The Reader Services Librarian is a member of the Widener and Lamont Access Services management team, who participates in shaping the direction of services for the department.  This position communicates and collaborates with unit heads at the Lamont Library and represents Lamont Reader Services in committee work and collaboration efforts across HCL and HUL. This position manages HUL's largest Reserves operation, servicing over 10,000 items supporting the curriculum of over 700 courses per year.  The Reader Services Librarian manages staff - exempt and non-exempt level-- who are cross-trained among units within Access Services and HCL, and manages staff supervision of a large student workforce.
Reporting to the Head of Reader Services, the Reader Services Librarian supports the research needs of the University's faculty, students, staff, visiting scholars and alumni by managing and administering the 24/5 operation of the Lamont Library Reader Services, which includes the circulation and reserves services. Serves as primary resource for staff, faculty, and patrons in their interactions with Lamont Reader Services and in the explanation of departmental policy and procedure. Monitors the operation, workflow, and planning for Lamont Reader  Services. Responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining, enforcing and analyzing policies, procedures, workflow and services of circulation and reserves.  Supervising a staff of six, assumes day-to-day responsibility for Lamont Reader Services monitoring the operation, workflow, staffing, and planning for over 150,000 circulations annually.  Assumes management of an active Reserves Program, orders titles in support of curriculum, and is responsible for managing a Reserves budget over 90K.  Will participate in task groups working on Access Services issues in the HCL and HUL levels.

Basic Qualifications:

  • MLS Degree; or equivalent professional work experience required working in a large scale academic setting; 2-4 + years of professional/exempt related work experience in an academic or research library setting;

Tenure-Track Faculty Position

The School of Library and Information Studies at University of Oklahoma invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position to begin fall 2011 at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will have responsibility for research, teaching, and service at the graduate and undergraduate levels and will be based at the University of Oklahoma’s Norman campus.

The mission of OU SLIS is to provide excellence in education, preparing leaders for a diverse, highly technological, knowledge-based global society; to engage in research and creative activities that generate new knowledge and applications for effective practice and that foster interdisciplinary approaches to address information challenges; and to meet the complex information needs of society through public and professional service. The School’s research, teaching, and creative activities focus on applications of information and communications technologies, services to multicultural populations with special emphasis on Native Americans, and comprises four core areas of emphasis: Organizational Development and Management, Content Management, Access to Knowledge Structures, and Information Technology.

The School has three degree programs: an ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information studies (MLIS); a master of science in knowledge management (MSKM), and a bachelor of arts in information studies (BAIS). Faculty members are located on two campuses, the main campus in Norman, and at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa. Courses are delivered on site at both locations, via video and online. Position Description: The School seeks an individual to conduct research, provide teaching, and engage in service activities in, but not limited to, OU SLIS’s Access to Knowledge Structures core area of emphasis. This core area addresses professional competences for promoting and strengthening information literacy, instruction, sources and collections, and services for information users of all types, including information users in public, school, academic and special libraries as well as those in corporate environments. The faculty position is a nine-month appointment and includes teaching at the School’s main sites in Norman and Tulsa (as well other instructional sites when needed), using a range of synchronous and asynchronous modalities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Required Qualifications: Requirements for the position include a doctoral degree (completed or nearly completed) in library and information science or a related field, a record of published research or demonstrated research potential, the ability to work with multiple internal and external constituencies, and the ability to teach within the Access to Knowledge Structures area of the OU SLIS curriculum.

Preferred Qualification: Experience or demonstrated ability in design and delivery of courses in a variety of formats, including distance-learning modes, is preferred.

The Assistant Director, Library Support Services, is responsible for the delivery of the library support services including administrative, financial services, human resources operations and library support functions. Responsibilities include program coordination and development; fiscal accountability: policy development, data analysis and interpretation of library systems: public relations, marketing, and dissemination of public information: strategic planning; and project management.

The Austin Public Library (APL) system consists of the John Henry Faulk Central Library, the Austin History Center and 20 branches. Current budget is $24.9 mil with a staff of 364 employed throughout the system. The Assistant Director will direct a staff of 75 employees. Nationally recognized, the Austin Public Library system has received numerous accolades, nationally and statewide, for excellence and innovation, including the National Library of the Year Award.

The Assistant Director of Library Support Services will be:
• An experienced executive with the ability to combine vision and innovative thinking to lead a major urban library through a critical period of growth with the building of the new central library and moving the department to be the “best managed” premier library;
• A strong leader with proven success in operating a sound fiscal program, experienced in the ability to forecast operational needs, manage large projects, evaluate program performance and analyze library issues to determine program direction and goals and initiate change;
 An effective communicator with excellent public speaking and consensus building skills to preside on boards and commissions, to address library and city policy, and be a collaborator that will forge relationships with city leaders, departments, and the community demonstrating a passion for library services
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree plus (5) five years of progressively responsible upper management level experience in a related field of which at least two years have been in a managerial capacity. Prefer experience in governmental financing, human resources, public relations, strategic planning, and library support administration.

Vermont Digital Newspaper Project Librarian/Library Assistant Professor

POSITION TITLE: Vermont Digital Newspaper Project Librarian / Library Assistant Professor (temporary position) / REPORTS TO: Project Director.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Reporting the Project Director at the University of Vermont, and in close collaboration with the state-wide Vermont Digital Newspaper Project Planning Group, (including colleagues at Vermont Department of Libraries, the Ilsley Public Library, the Vermont Historical Society) the Project Librarian will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination and management of the Vermont Digital Newspaper Project, including overseeing all selection, technical and administrative activities, assisting in the design and development of the project web site, monitoring budget, and managing relationships with external partners and vendors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Manages project staff and coordinates project workflow.
 Trains and supervises the Digital Support Specialist (1 FTE)
 Works with the VTDNP Planning Group, Advisory Committee members, the Library of Congress, partners at other institutions to develop the Vermont Digital Newspaper Project.
 In coordination with the Project Director, assists in managing the project budget.
 Prepares a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the microfilm duplication, digitization, and optical character recognition
 Works with vendors to ensure quality deliverables and negotiate budgetary issues.
 Coordinates assessment of newspaper microfilm quality and suitability for digitization.
 Oversees the selection, digitization, metadata capture, OCR, workflow control, quality control, and other activities involved in digitizing historic newspapers.
 Develops and maintains tracking system for microfilm and digital deliverables.
 Manages the development of the project website.
 Receives and edits title essays (500 words for each title digitized)
 Creates documentation, and maintains complete and accurate records of all work performed.
 Responsible for reporting of microfilm selection data and digital deliverables fulfillment.
 Delivers progress reports on specified semi-annual schedule.
 Responds to public, professional and scholarly inquiries.
 Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited school or foreign equivalent with experience and a solid understanding of digitization and/or microfilm conversion projects, including microfilm inspection and suitability for digitization, experience with XML and standards-based metadata schemas (non-MARC and MARC) and principles governing standards in digital libraries; demonstrated project management experience; supervisory experience; knowledge of newspapers or serials, and ability to assess complex relationships between titles; quality control experience; demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail. Equally important are strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work with a variety of people; flexibility and willingness to shift priorities according to current needs; a sense of humor; commitment to professional growth. Some travel is required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:


This position is funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant to begin digitization of Vermont’s microfilmed newspapers. The Vermont Digital Newspaper Project, a part of the National Digital Newspaper Program developed by NEH and the Library of Congress, will digitize 100,000 Vermont newspaper pages between the years of 1836 and 1922 during the two-year grant period. Newspapers digitized as part of the grant award will be included in the Library of Congress’ Chronicling America database at http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov
